Gwangalli Japanese diner: karaage & kkanpung mega sets, Daidokoro

In short

Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch (다이도코로 광안리본점) is a Japanese home-style set-meal restaurant in Namcheon-dong, Suyeong, Busan, near Geumnyeonsan Station. A regular of 3 years went with a friend and ordered a karaage mega set, a kkanpung chicken (sweet-spicy garlic fried chicken) mega set with curry topping, and a side of menbosha (shrimp toast); the mega sets were so generous that the two friends still left some behind. Verdict: at Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch, choose a set that comes with croquette and curry over the plain set meal.

I've been going to this Japanese spot steadily for about three years now, my go-to place I keep coming back to. It's well known among nearby office workers and travelers, and thanks to the consistent flavor and warm service, I always leave happy and full. It's Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch (다이도코로 광안리본점). This time I picked a day with a friend and went all out on eating... I'm going to spill everything, from tips on the efficient waiting system to honest reviews of each dish.

Getting to Daidokoro from Geumnyeonsan Station

It's about a 5-minute walk from Exit 5 of Geumnyeonsan Station, close to the start of the beach, so public transport access is great. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, but it's so popular that a break can kick in when stock runs out, so hurry during peak time.

How does the Catch Table queue at Daidokoro work?

At the Catch Table kiosk in front of the restaurant, you have to finish ordering your menu in advance, not just enter your party size. The waiting system is a little unusual and well organized compared to other places. While you wait outside, a staff member kindly calls you as soon as a table opens. Because you've already ordered, the food arrives surprisingly fast after you sit, so turnover is quick. When you're hungry, not waiting long for food is a huge plus ‼️ (Though you may end up waiting outside in the heat...)

Even the waiting area has that Japanese vibe... figurines, and a whiteboard so you don't get bored (?).

The interior stands out with cute figurine decor that shows off the owner's huge love of Japan and personal taste.

Cute props and figurines all around Daidokoro

There are adorable props and hidden figurines all around the shop, so looking around while waiting for food was fun.

They even perch a tiny figurine on the plated food, so you can't help taking photos. Every little detail is full of charm. There's also a room in the back for groups.

There's a phone charging service and separate spoon rests, and the homemade milk pudding must be popular because they sell it to take away.

What did we order at Daidokoro with a friend?

There's a nice range of set menus, including a draft beer set, a plum set (with plum ade) and a basic set meal.

I upgraded my usual karaage (Japanese fried chicken) set meal to the karaage mega set, and added curry topping to the kkanpung chicken set (sweet-spicy fried chicken; upgraded to the mega set), which I was trying for the first time, plus a side of menbosha (shrimp toast). I got a cute fried egg as a freebie too, so the table was loaded..🤤

Drinks come in a cute Kumamon cup.

You can write in the guestbook, and lots of people have drawn pictures. There's also a separate review guide, probably because so many people asked about reviews.

How big are the Daidokoro mega sets?

The mega set has a lot more meat, and even with a friend who eats well, we left a little behind. Usually the basic set meal alone leaves me pleasantly full, but the mega set is seriously huge. I almost burst.

The biggest difference between the set meal and the set menus is that a set comes with a soft croquette and rich curry topping on the same plate. I'd recommend the set over the plain set meal... (I didn't know when ordering, so I went with the kkanpung set meal...)

Karaage mega set taste

First, the signature karaage: crispy outside, tender and moist inside, with juices flowing softly with every bite ‼️🥵 Eating it with the cabbage salad piled on the plate cuts the greasiness freshly. Without the cabbage I couldn't finish the fried food... it really handles the heaviness better than you'd expect.

Extra orders go through the tablet, and the shichimi (Japanese seven-spice), salad dressing and furikake (rice seasoning) on the table help you get more out of the plate.

Kkanpung chicken set and curry topping

The kkanpung chicken set I tried for the first time had a sweet-salty sauce that was wonderfully balanced~ If you like punchy flavors, you'll be satisfied. Addictive, my chopsticks kept going back.

Even if you order the set meal on its own, I recommend adding the curry topping. Maybe because it's aged curry, mixing it into the rice and putting the fried chicken on top tasted great..! Perfect when you get tired of the other sauces. The side dishes are varied too: soup, kimchi, pickled radish for chicken, gochujang pickles, fried tofu and danmuji (yellow pickled radish), so I finished the meal cleanly down to the last bite without getting sick of it.

Side menbosha taste

The menbosha I ordered as a side tasted, from the first bite, like the familiar, delicious Lotteria shrimp burger, but crunchier. The shrimp was bouncy and the coating was so crispy you could hear it, and I almost ordered another but was too full, so I held back~!
