Weekend lunch date at a Seokchon Station Korean BBQ: Sutbul Seonghwa
In short
Sutbul Seonghwa is a charcoal hanwoo (Korean beef) grill house a 5–6 minute walk from Seokchon Station Exit 1 in Songpa, Seoul. Arriving on a weekend between 1 and 2pm meant no wait at all, and the meal was the signature Seonghwa modum platter (99,900 won, 240g sirloin plus 160g wine-marinated short rib) with hanwoo doenjang jjigae, where wholegrain mustard and wasabi ranked as the best pairing. Sutbul Seonghwa makes an easy Jamsil date course: beef first, then a walk around Seokchon Lake.

I visited a famous charcoal beef spot near Seokchon Lake — turns out it's a great place for a date too -
The signature menu is the Seonghwa modum (assorted platter), which comes with Seonghwa sirloin and wine-marinated short rib.
Where is Sutbul Seonghwa, and is there parking?

I walked over, and it took about 5–6 minutes from Seokchon Station Exit 1.

The exterior looked stylish even from outside.

Turns out it's a restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide.
Inside Sutbul Seonghwa: atmosphere and seating

A simple, clean atmosphere inside.

The seating was tidy and the chairs were surprisingly cushioned!!
There's a storage box under the seat, plus a bag storage area on the left.

The interior definitely has an upscale vibe — it looked great for a family dinner too. There were a lot of couples on dates like us.
What we ordered: the 99,900 won Seonghwa modum platter

What I ordered was the signature <Seonghwa modum>.

As a side we ordered <hanwoo doenjang jjigae>.
Various side dishes to go with drinks, and

a wide range of side menu items! Surprising to see sea urchin on the menu at a beef place.

The drinks menu was varied too, from highballs to whiskey.
Was there a wait at 1–2pm on a weekend?
I visited around 1–2pm on the weekend, and there was no wait — we walked right in! The staff walked us through the setup and table settings, and grilled the first portion for us. After that, you grill it yourself!

Charcoal plus grill grate, and a clean ventilation system.

The table setting felt really upscale too.
<Seonghwa modum> ₩99,900 — 240g Seonghwa sirloin + 160g wine-marinated short rib.

The marbling is unreal.. this is where I started drooling...........

The smoke was absorbed so well that my clothes didn't even smell after eating.

They cut it into nice bite-sized pieces.

Grilled medium rare for us. Loved that there were so many seasonings to dip it in!

Premium Joseon-hyangmi rice and hanwoo doenjang jjigae
Eating it with rice and a dab of wasabi was pure bliss.. the rice was some kind of premium 'Joseon-hyangmi' variety, which really did taste different?; my boyfriend said he could really taste the aroma in the rice.

Best pairings ranked: wholegrain mustard, myeongi namul, baek-kimchi
This time my boyfriend did the grilling himself, and he did just as well as the staff.
The white kimchi (baek-kimchi) here is the real kicker. Make sure to try it!!
I asked my boyfriend for medium rare and he nailed it.
A bite with myeong-i namul (mountain garlic leaves) and wasabi. Ugh.. I want to eat it again.

The pickled onions were just so-so.
There were pickled cucumbers, and I found a heart-shaped one which made me weirdly happy haha.
A bite with wholegrain mustard.
Wholegrain mustard and wasabi together — this was my #1 combo.
Make sure to order the stew here too..
Wine-marinated short rib and buttered button mushrooms
Wine-marinated short rib.

I usually prefer unseasoned meat, but here the seasoned version was even more, more, more delicious.

A bite topped with wasabi and white kimchi.

Grilling the button mushrooms with butter on top gave them such great flavor!

Free Excellent ice cream for dessert
The final dessert was Excellent🤍 — you can order it separately for free.

I eat meals and ice cream dessert at home often, but the way they thoughtfully served Excellent.. I became a regular. My younger sibling always said a truly great restaurant takes care of dessert too.
Honest review of Sutbul Seonghwa: pros, cons and who it suits
Pros: it's a bit pricey, but the taste and quality both matched the price.
Cons: it was a little disappointing that they only grilled the first round for us, and after that we had to grill it ourselves.
- Anyone dating near Jamsil or Seokchon Lake
- Anyone with an upscale gathering — matchmaking, blind dates, or family meetups
I visited on a nice day, had a hearty meal, and followed it up with a walk around Seokchon Lake — it was so good that I especially recommend this to anyone planning a Jamsil date!
