Chuseok hot pot at Bangi-dong Korean restaurant Boseung Hoegwan

In short

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a 24-hour Korean gukbap (rice-and-soup) and hot pot restaurant on Ogeum-ro in Songpa, Seoul, directly across from Seokchon Lake. Open through the Chuseok holiday when most places were closed, we ordered the medium sundae gopchang jeongol (blood sausage and beef tripe hot pot, 32,000 won), the self-serve rice balls that come with it, and a sundae plate (7,000 won) — the hot pot alone feeds 2 to 3, so two big eaters were stuffed even before the extra rice. The spicy broth thickened with ground perilla seeds is what makes this hot pot worth the trip.

My partner flew all the way to Korea just in time for the Chuseok holiday ♡ The moment they landed, all they wanted was something spicy and hot, Korean-style, so I got to work searching for good spots in Bangi-dong.

So many restaurants were closed for the Chuseok holiday, but Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch — a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) restaurant in Bangi-dong — is open 24 hours, every day of the year!!!! (Shortened hours on Chuseok Day and the 26th though.) I'd already been to another branch of Boseung Hoegwan before, so I knew I could trust it, and we headed straight over.

Where is Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch? Right across from Seokchon Lake

Boseung Hoegwan is spacious and sits right across from Seokchon Lake :-) Great spot to stop by before or after a walk around the lake! There's even parking space right in front, making this Bangi-dong spot feel even bigger.

Inside Boseung Hoegwan: high chairs and tables for groups

Spacious, clean interior of Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch
Dining hall inside Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch

The inside is just as clean and spacious as the outside. It was pretty crowded even on the Chuseok holiday so I couldn't get seating photos, but between 2-person tables, 4-person tables, group seating, and even baby chairs, it looks like a place for everyone.

There's a big menu board outside, so let's take a look before heading in.

Order kiosk placed at every table
Menu page with samgyetang and pancake items

Each table has its own kiosk plus a mini menu, so ordering is super easy!!! There's a range of gukbap (soup with rice) — sundaeguk, suyuk gukbap, naejang gukbap — and you can pick your spice level, or pay ₩2,000 more for an extra-large size. The Sundae Hangjeong Suyuk Set (₩16,000) is a hearty combo where you get both sundae and boiled pork alongside the soup :-)

Beyond that there's samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), bone soup, gamjatang (pork bone stew), mung bean pancake, and seafood pancake — plenty of options whether you're nursing a hangover or having a drink.

In the mood for something extra spicy, the two of us went with the medium sundae gopchang jeongol (sundae and beef tripe hot pot) plus self-serve rice balls. I don't usually love Korean food that much, but I do love sundae — especially the kind with pork in it — so I figured I should get some sundae too, and ended up adding a sundae plate as well (at this point I'd completely forgotten the hot pot was already 2-3 servings lol).

How the self-serve rice balls work

Self-serve rice ball ingredients served in a brass bowl

The self-serve rice balls came out first. A big brass bowl with a large mound of rice, seaweed flakes, flying fish roe, and pickled radish — a combination that basically can't taste bad.

We mixed it all up energetically. I asked my partner to shape it into round rice balls, and they made genuinely fist-sized balls. So I took over and made smaller, rounder ones.

They were tasty even on their own, and even better with kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi), but we decided to save them to eat alongside the hot pot.

Sundae plate, 7,000 won: three kinds of blood sausage

Sundae plate with three types of sundae, ₩7,000

My favorite thing ever — sundae — arrives as the sundae plate (₩7,000). Three types of sundae come out: my favorite kind stuffed with meat and vegetables, and the glass-noodle-packed baeksundae too — !

Sundae filling dipped in salted shrimp sauce

I'm from Busan so I usually dip my sundae in ssamjang, and I did want that a little, but sundae dipped in salted shrimp sauce was also great. The filling inside was packed with quality ingredients :-)

Medium sundae gopchang hot pot, 32,000 won: too much for two?

Medium-size sundae gopchang jeongol topped with perilla powder

Next up, the sundae gopchang jeongol (₩32,000). The portion is massive. Napa cabbage, mushrooms, onion, perilla leaves, glass noodles, all topped with a heap of perilla powder ~

Pot of hot pot full of napa cabbage and perilla leaves
Sundae gopchang jeongol starting to boil

The clear broth turns magically red the more it boils ♡

Aah~ it looked so delicious just watching it that we were sitting there anxiously waiting for it to boil more, and once the staff told us we could eat once it started bubbling, we finally scooped some into our small plates and dug in :-)

Sundae and tripe scooped onto a small plate
Sundae and meat hidden beneath the vegetables

Hiding under all those vegetables was a huge amount of sundae and chewy meat!!!! You could also add glass noodles, ramyeon noodles, or rice cake, and we thought about adding more glass noodles later, but even for us big eaters the portion was already massive.

Thanks to the generous perilla powder, the broth got even deeper and thicker. It went so well with the perilla leaves, mushrooms, and onion :-) The spicy, hot broth in this sundae gopchang jeongol was absolutely amazing ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Extra bowl of rice added alongside the hot pot

We were already so full, but sundae gopchang jeongol just needs a bowl of rice,,, so we added one. We were already stuffed lol. The hot pot alone was 2-3 servings, and on top of that we had the sundae plate, the self-serve rice balls, AND added rice — we really ate an insane amount.

Still, it was worth every bite — Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a real Bangi-dong gem :-)
