Medium-rare hanwoo yakiniku date in Daejeon: Yakiniku Doryong

Yakiniku Doryong is a hanwoo (Korean beef) yakiniku restaurant on Ekseupo-ro in Doryong-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where every seat is at the counter and staff grill the meat in front of you. The writer ordered the set for two (beef sashimi, a hanwoo assortment of tenderloin, striploin, flap meat and brisket, and special tripe) plus beef ramyeon, and was pleased with the requested medium-rare grilling, the smoke extraction and the cut-by-cut explanations. With a calm black interior and free corkage, Yakiniku Doryong is a strong choice for a date or anniversary hanwoo dinner in Daejeon.

Eel buffet with partitioned seats in Jijok-dong, Daejeon: Songrimbok

Songrimbok Jangeo Unlimited Eel Daejeon Direct Store (송림복장어) is a newly opened all-you-can-eat freshwater eel restaurant in Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. For ₩29,000 per adult, the writer grilled eel, pork belly and chicken neck from the self-serve bar for 2 hours, got a free bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine) as an opening event, and finished with buckwheat makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles). Despite low expectations for a buffet, the thick, glossy eel was a real surprise, making Songrimbok Jangeo a good-value pick for an eel group dinner.

Daejeon Chinese restaurant, 8-seat table team lunch: Macheonchwi

Macheonchwi (마천취) is a large, upscale Chinese restaurant on Dunsan-daero 117beon-gil in Mannyeon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, with plenty of seating. Six coworkers sat at an 8-seat table for a weekday lunch and shared Peking-style tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork, medium), Chinese cold noodles, samseon jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and samseon ganjjajang (dry black bean noodles) topped with a whole abalone; the noodle portions were truly generous and the staff were friendly. With its spacious dining room, Macheonchwi is a good fit for a team lunch.

Charcoal BBQ for two with two noodle bowls in Daejeon: Jeonbotdae

Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop is a charcoal pre-grilled pork belly restaurant on Saeul-ro in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon. Two diners shared the charcoal pre-grilled mixed platter for 2-3 people (49,900 won) and still added kimchi noodle soup and bibim noodles, and the wrap of unseasoned gim with pollock roe mayo and pickled chili pepper was the most memorable bite. The meat quality and the side dishes at Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop were both good enough to come back for.
