Mugwort soy milk powder shaken in a tumbler: Garu Seonsaeng Ssuk

In short

Garu Seonsaeng Saeng Duyu Ssuk (Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae 타먹는 생두유 쑥) is a Korean mugwort soy milk powder: 2 of the included scoops plus 180ml of water make one cup at 134kcal with 7g of plant protein. Wanting to copy the mugwort soy milk recipe from the TV show Pyeonstorang without buying mugwort powder and soy milk separately, the writer solved it with this one product, carrying just the powder in a tumbler and shaking it with cold water after a workout. It dissolves without clumps even in cold water and stays filling long enough to stand in for a skipped meal.

The Pyeonstorang mugwort soy milk recipe, done with one Garu Seonsaeng powder

Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae Taemeokneun Saengduyu Ssuk is a mugwort soy milk powder that means you don't have to buy mugwort powder and soy milk separately. I saw a mugwort soy milk recipe on the TV show Pyeonstorang and it bugged me that I'd need to buy two separate ingredients to try it — this one product solved that.

The mugwort soy milk recipe was introduced by actress Moon Jung-hee, who I really like, on Pyeonstorang! It's supposed to be good for constipation too, but when I tried to follow along I realized I'd need to buy mugwort powder and soy milk separately, and finding domestic ones at a reasonable price was hard. With Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae's mugwort soy milk, the ingredient list had no confusing terms I didn't recognize, and I liked that it's Korean-grown soybeans, mugwort, and sea salt. Dissolving well in cold water was a bonus!

134kcal and 7g of plant protein per cup

I'd seen this as a stick at Olive Young, but mine came in a pouch. It packs in 7g of plant protein, and since it uses unrefined raw sugar, the calorie count is a manageable 134kcal. So many products are marketed as healthy snacks but load up on sugar or use alternative sweeteners that strain the body — that's something to watch closely, right?

Just mix 2 of the included scoops with 180ml of water. Done!!!!

Really that simple, right? Couldn't be more effortless... Mixed with plain water it tastes rich like a latte, but I imagine it'd work in an interesting new way mixed into soy milk or regular milk too. If you're handy in the kitchen, it seems like it could work fine in cakes or cookies as well.

What the Garu Seonsaeng brochure says

Along with info on the mugwort soy milk recipe, the brochure explains that they use everything from the soybean skin to the pulp to capture the full nutrition of the bean, that the shelf life is 12 months but they only make small batches to keep it fresh, and it lays out Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae's philosophy. It's suitable from age 1, and the brand clearly leans on reviews a lot, which reads as real confidence and pride in the product.

Fine powder and a built-in scoop compartment

The powder particles in Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae's mugwort soy milk are really fine, so even dissolved in cold water it doesn't clump, mixes well, and the thickness is easy to adjust. One scoop, two scoops, each one packed full and leveled off. You can adjust it to taste, but I think the recommended ratio is probably the tastiest, haha.

The included scoop fitting neatly inside the pouch

We've all had that experience of the scoop not fitting anywhere and going missing, right? They made it fit perfectly inside the pouch, which is so great! Once you scoop out two spoonfuls there's exactly enough space for it to slot in — such a small but thoughtful touch for someone as scatterbrained as me!!

What mugwort soy milk tastes like mixed with cold water

I scooped two spoonfuls and went straight to the water dispenser for cold water — it's genuinely that simple, almost too simple to even call a recipe. Just stir while the water pours in, and it dissolves smoothly with no clumping.

As I mentioned, the fine particles dissolve well even in cold water, so this one product alone is enough for a mugwort soy milk recipe. It's close to a mugwort latte you'd buy at a café, but mixed with water it tastes a bit cleaner. I'm not a fan of the heavy, coating aftertaste you get from lattes, so the fact that it's tasty even mixed with plain water was a big plus for me.

A cup of mugwort soy milk with ice floating in it

Even better with ice floating in it. In cold winter, mixing it into warm milk would probably make a healthy, filling snack too. Beyond mugwort, there are flavors like matcha, chocolate, injeolmi (sweet rice cake), black sesame, 18-grain, seoritae (black bean), baektae (white bean), and yakkong (medicinal black bean), so it works well as a meal substitute for kids or elders, and feels like a healthy, filling, simple meal for people on a diet too. The calories hold up well compared to other brands' shakes.

Powder only in the tumbler: one cup after the workout

On days when my schedule is packed awkwardly before and after, I put just the powder in a tumbler like this, head out, and after finishing my workout I add only cold water and shake it up well, haha.

Using this to substitute for a meal I couldn't eat meant I didn't overeat afterward, and I didn't get mouth sores from skipping either.

Drinking the thick, well-mixed mugwort soy milk

Does it stay filling without any crunchy bits?

Unlike a regular shake, I worried it might feel a bit empty without any chewy crunch to work your jaw on, but the thick, dense mugwort powder makes up for that — you end up sort of chewing it even without crunch, and it kept me satisfyingly full for a long time. No trash left behind either, so no guilt there — a big plus!!!

I received this as a sponsored product, but Garuseonsaeng Seoritae Seoritae's mugwort latte really hits that old-fashioned grandma-palate spot for me. Healthy ingredients, an actually enjoyable everyday taste, and convenience — those three strengths make this a product I hope helps anyone looking for a healthy snack.
