Guro Chinese restaurant mapo tofu rice set: Junghwa Yori Hyeon

In short

Junghwa Yori Hyeon is a Chinese restaurant in the basement food court of Ace Twin Tower 1, by Guro Digital Complex Station in Guro, Seoul. At lunch the chilli sweet and sour pork set with two rice and noodle picks — mapo tofu rice and ganjjajang (black bean noodles) — came to 32,000 won, and the pork stayed crisp under the spicy chilli sauce while the mapo tofu was deeply savoury. The free jjamppong broth was rich enough that Junghwa Yori Hyeon is worth a return trip just for the jjamppong.

I've been completely obsessed with Chinese food lately... haha. Starting with the neighborhood spot and working through all the famous places one by one! Today there was a Chinese restaurant near my office with amazing reviews, so I couldn't resist and ran over during lunch break. Let's go!!

The exterior alone gives off that real old-school Chinese restaurant energy — I immediately thought 'okay, this is a genuine gem' haha. Turns out it's tucked away in the corner of the basement food court of my office building, and it had that fast-turnover, packed-at-lunch-peak aura written all over it.

How much is the set menu at Junghwa Yori Hyeon?

Let me show you the menu! The set menu pricing here is unbelievably reasonable. This kind of dish, especially chilli sweet and sour pork, usually runs pretty pricey, but ordering it bundled with two meals didn't feel like a burden at all.

Getting this quality at this price in today's economy... it's the perfect spot for when your wallet's feeling light. I really felt like I'd found a hidden gem that nails both value and taste.

We ordered the chilli sweet and sour pork set with mapo tofu rice and ganjjajang (₩32,000)

Beyond the food, the woman serving us was so friendly the whole time we were choosing and ordering that it put me in a great mood haha. Even during the busy lunch rush, she paid attention to every single customer, and honestly it made me even hungrier before the food even arrived!! I guess it's true — good food matters, but this kind of kindness is what keeps your feet coming back.

What does the chilli sweet and sour pork taste like?

Chilli sweet and sour pork topped with plenty of spicy sauce

Finally, the chilli sweet and sour pork I'd been waiting for!!! It's nothing like the plain sweet sweet chilli I usually get — this had a fiery, spicy kick that was full of charm! Even with all that sauce piled on, the pork stayed so crispy that I laughed out loud after the first bite. Seriously delicious.

Cross-section of chilli sweet and sour pork showing thick-cut meat

The meat inside was noticeably thick-cut, yet there wasn't a hint of gaminess — super tender and never tough. Every bite made it clear they weren't skimping on fresh, quality ingredients.

Mapo tofu rice and the free jjamppong broth

The real highlight of the day was, hands down, the mapo tofu! The seasoning wasn't overpowering but still packed an explosion of umami — truly excellent — and the tofu was soft with that lovely, delicate texture. So good.

The jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) broth they gave us on the house was so rich and thick it was insane! One sip and I already decided I need to come back specifically to demolish a bowl of jjamppong next time!!

Ganjjajang topped with a fried egg
Noodles mixed with thick ganjjajang sauce

Is the ganjjajang worth ordering?

Can you see how thick and glossy that ganjjajang (dry-style black bean noodle) sauce looks in the photo? Haha. It clung to every noodle strand — the absolute peak of thick, gooey texture! And I was genuinely touched that they topped it with a fried egg by default, without needing to add it as an extra, which is rare these days 🥹. The crunchy onions kept their bite too, making every mouthful fun to chew — honestly one of the best ganjjajang I've ever had 🍜

Overall the food quality across the board was so impressive that I completely understood why the reviews were so good. Whenever I get a Chinese food craving, this is now my go-to spot! What do you all say — how about treating yourself to a solid Chinese lunch today? ✨
