Wagyu lunch set at Mugen, a Marine City Japanese restaurant in Busan

Today I visited Mugen, a spot in Marine City where you can enjoy Japanese food with an oceanview.

I'd been looking for a place to eat while looking at the sea, and once I visited, the set composition turned out to be more substantial than I expected.

We ordered both the lunch wagyu grill set and the hinoki steam set. Eating the two together meant we could try almost the entire menu in a varied way, which was great.

What does Mugen look like inside, and how good is the Marine City ocean view?

Inside, Mugen had a clean, distinctly Japanese-feeling atmosphere.

The view of Dongbaekseom island's sea through the window was especially pretty, so I naturally kept glancing outside while eating. Being a Japanese restaurant with an oceanview, it seemed like a good fit for a date or a meal with parents.

From steamed egg to tataki salad: what comes with every Mugen set

Both sets came with steamed egg, an appetizer, green salad, sashimi platter, Nagasaki champon, and plum tea. We started with the steamed egg, which came out beautifully plated — soft and easy to eat.

Next came the salad and tataki. The tataki was served with sesame sauce, and eating it together with the salad added a nutty flavor — a good combination.

Meanwhile, the hinoki steam was being prepared to the side.

Sashimi platter and tuna you grill yourself

While the hinoki steam was cooking, we tried the sashimi platter first, and I liked being able to enjoy a variety of fish all at once.

There was salmon and tuna, plus marinated shrimp, so the variety was great.

They also gave us sushi rice, so we could top it with sashimi ourselves. 😋

There was a menu item of grilling tuna, and personally, this was really delicious. It felt totally different from just eating it raw and left a real impression!

While we worked through the sashimi piece by piece, the hinoki steam finally finished. When we opened the lid, two trays came out, both packed full of vegetables and meat.

The bean sprouts and napa cabbage were soft and moist from being steamed, and the sweet pumpkin was sweet and tender from steaming too. Eating the meat and vegetables together made for a hearty meal without feeling heavy.

Next was the wagyu grill. Cooking each piece of meat one by one on a small tabletop brazier with a sizzle added some fun of grilling it ourselves while eating.

Being able to eat it warm right off the grill was great, and having the brazier right at the table definitely made the meal feel a bit more special.

Finally, we finished with Nagasaki champon (spicy seafood noodle soup). The broth wasn't sharply spicy but mellow and warm, which was a nice way to wrap things up after eating so many dishes. At the end, plum tea came out too, rounding off the meal cleanly.

Laid out like this, the whole table really was packed full, right? Being able to eat sashimi, steamed dishes, grilled meat and warm soup all in one sitting felt great for anyone who wants to enjoy a little bit of many things. Especially with the chatting that happens while grilling meat yourself and waiting for the hinoki steam, it would make a good date course too. With ocean views to enjoy alongside the meal, it was a place where you could also take in the atmosphere while eating.
