Hyangdong hanwoo hot pot with mustard-soy sauce, Goyang: Doonjeong
In short
Doonjeong is a hanwoo (Korean beef) gomtang restaurant in Hyangdong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang. On a Saturday evening the writer ordered the hanwoo hot pot at 49,000 won, served in a brass pot with thinly sliced beef, white tremella and oyster mushrooms, chives and scallions, and staff poured in clear broth at the table. With a dipping sauce of soy sauce over cheongyang chili and mustard, plus free broth refills, Doonjeong makes a mild, comforting meal.

This place also has a branch in Hongdae, and it's a hanwoo gomtang (Korean beef bone soup) specialist that insists on using only female hanwoo cattle.

I visited on a Saturday evening — even with lots of families around, it wasn't loud at all, which I really appreciated.

The overall atmosphere is clean and quiet, making it a great spot to eat and chat with your dining companions.

Doonjeong menu, prices and Korean-grown ingredients
Besides gomtang, Doonjeong also serves a variety of hanwoo dishes!

The menu is packed: 1++ Hanwoo Yukhoe Bibimbap ₩16,000, Spicy Tripe Gomtang ₩18,000, Clear Hanwoo Gomtang ₩13,000 and Special ₩16,000.
Suji (beef tendon) Gomtang ₩16,000 and the limited-run Chadol (brisket) Gomtang ₩18,000 also caught my eye. There's a wide range of choices, like Seasoned Meat half plate ₩11,000, Meat Chive Pancake ₩17,000, and Shrimp Minari Pancake ₩19,000. It clearly states that all ingredients — from the hanwoo beef itself to Jeollanam-do Saecheongmu rice, cabbage, and chili powder — are domestic, which gave me confidence.

You can also try Gangsoe ₩9,000, Potato liquor ₩10,000, and Omija Makgeolli ₩7,000, Soju ₩5,000 — unique, special drinks you don't often come across.
What comes with the 49,000 won hanwoo hot pot?
The main dish I chose this time was the Doonjeong Hanwoo Hot Pot, ₩49,000.

I'd actively recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy a hearty meat dish without rice, or who's looking for a great drinking snack.
In the brass hot pot, thinly sliced tender beef lines the edge generously, with a round, pretty white tremella mushroom sitting right in the center.

Fresh oyster mushrooms, fragrant chives, and scallions are neatly arranged on top, making it look wonderful too. A staff member pours clear broth into the pot from a kettle, and as it simmers, the flavors of the meat and vegetables meld together beautifully.

Getting to eat plenty of fiber-rich mushrooms and vegetables together with clean-tasting meat made me feel healthy throughout the meal.

Side dishes and the mustard-soy dipping sauce
Salt and pepper are set neatly on the table so you can season to taste.

The basic side dishes are neatly served cabbage kimchi and diced radish kimchi (kkakdugi) — the crunchy cabbage kimchi really suited my taste and paired wonderfully with the hot pot meat.

The sauce for dipping the meat is anything but ordinary. A small dish arrives with finely chopped cheongyang chili and mustard,

and you pour the soy sauce prepared on the table over it and mix it all together yourself — a fun way to do it. The sharp mustard and spicy cheongyang chili really lift the clean flavor of the meat, and they pair perfectly.

Finishing with clear hanwoo broth and free refills
Above all, the broth, carefully simmered from good-quality hanwoo, is exceptional.

You can tell right away it's not that artificial MSG-heavy taste, but a healthy broth drawn purely from the ingredients themselves.

It's lightly seasoned by default, so adding a bit of salt and pepper brings out a wonderful savory depth. They also refill the hot pot broth, so you can stay warm and full throughout the meal, which was great.

Even the refilled broth — all gone.

It was so delicious I ended up slurping down even the broth. A certified great restaurant!!! The staff were kind too, the food was delicious, and it was so satisfying... 💙 If you're looking for a clean, un-fussy hanwoo meal, how about a warm, hearty dinner at Doonjeong in Hyangdong, a top spot in Deogyang-gu?
