Late 2pm lunch at a Hagye sushi buffet: chocolate fountain, Kuu Kuu

Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch is an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet on the 6th floor of the Seoul Oncheon Building near Hagye Station in Nowon, Seoul. The writer and a partner came for a late 2pm lunch and tried sushi, sashimi and fried dishes, plus marshmallows from the chocolate fountain and banana-chocolate bead ice cream. Fast turnover kept the sashimi fresh, and with plenty of families dining, Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch is a good spot for a family gathering in Nowon.

Pork galbi by Uijeongbu Station: late dinner, free naengmyeon, Manpo

Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi restaurant on a corner of the new town near Uijeongbu Station in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, and it serves housemade Hamheung naengmyeon (cold noodles) for free. Over a late dinner, the writer and a partner had 2 servings of housemade marinated galbi at ₩16,000 each, a ₩4,000 brisket doenjang stew, and both mul naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon, then added a third serving of galbi. The fruit-based marinade is mild and the side dishes, yukhoe included, are generous, so Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a solid galbi spot near Uijeongbu Station, especially if you order the naengmyeon when the meat is almost cooked.

Nowon Korean restaurant where the spring set arrives fast: Sutgarak

Sutgarak Bansang Masil (숟가락반상 마실) is a Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant at 412 Nowon-ro in Nowon, Seoul, within a 10-minute walk of Nowon Station. Two of us ordered the spring Masil set at 27,000 won per person. After a barley and cherry blossom porridge, the whole table arrived at once shortly after ordering, including herbal bossam (boiled pork), braised short ribs with mushrooms, Masil tteokgalbi (grilled beef patties) and cherry blossom rice. Thanks to the fast service and calm wood-toned room, Sutgarak Bansang Masil is worth recommending for a family gathering or in-law meeting in Nowon.

Ring workshop in Uijeongbu: Axis couple rings, sizing tip at Ring Plus

Ring Plus Uijeongbu Branch (반지더하기 의정부점) is a ring workshop on the 5th floor of the downtown McDonald's building on Haengbok-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. A couple filed and polished Axis-design couple rings in a private room at Ring Plus and received the finished rings the same day, about 1 hour 30 minutes later, along with a Polaroid taken by staff and free aftercare. The rings felt slightly looser after finishing than at the fitting, so allow for that when choosing your size at Ring Plus.

Uijeongbu pork cutlet with homemade sweet-and-sour sauce: Yangchonri

Yangchonri Donkaseu Millak Branch (양촌리돈가스 민락점) is an old-style pork cutlet restaurant with a 40-year tradition, on the 2nd floor of the Starbucks Millak Town building in Millak 2-jigu, Uijeongbu. The writer ordered the 2-person set (Yangchonri pork cutlet, fire-grilled jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) rice bowl and 2 fried shrimp) with extra cheese for 29,800 won, and the sweet-and-sour natural homemade sauce was memorable enough to make the writer's personal top 3 cutlets. For pork cutlet and a jjukkumi rice bowl together in Millak 2-jigu, the Yangchonri Donkaseu 2-person set is a satisfying choice.

Pork belly BBQ for two before closing in Uijeongbu: Cheonpo Hoegwan

Cheonpo Hoegwan Uijeongbu Main Branch is a minari pork belly BBQ restaurant on Beomgol-ro 145beon-gil in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. On a reserved visit near closing time, two people shared 2 servings of pork belly and a 3,000 won minari doenjang stew (soybean paste stew). The free side dishes included yukhoe (seasoned raw beef), a bubbling snail ssamjang (dipping sauce) and batter for a self-serve minari kimchi pancake. For thick pork belly and a generous spread of side dishes, Cheonpo Hoegwan is a satisfying choice.

Pocheon Italian restaurant with 14-hour squid-ink bread: From Italy

From Italy (프롬이태리) Gomori Main Branch is a European-style Italian restaurant on Jugyeopsan-ro in Soheul-eup, Pocheon, Gyeonggi. At From Italy we had zucca dolce pasta served in a whole kabocha squash, scallop basil risotto and a half-and-half blueberry and arugula prosciutto pizza, and the warm squid-ink ciabatta and house-made pickles were just as satisfying. If you want pasta with a striking presentation and a two-flavor half-and-half pizza, From Italy Gomori Main Branch is a great fit.

Sokcho noodle spot, early booked lunch: buckwheat crepe rolls, Topgol

Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch (속초탑골막국수 본점) is a buckwheat noodle restaurant near Sokcho Beach in Sokcho, Gangwon, specializing in deulmemak (perilla oil buckwheat noodles, ₩13,000). The family booked an early lunch and ordered deulmemak, buckwheat makguksu (₩10,000), a kids' set with jajang rice (₩6,000) and buckwheat jeonbyeong (₩10,000). Even at that early hour, Sokcho Topgol Makguksu was full with a steady line. With a menu for children, it is a good stop for a family meal on a Sokcho trip.

Yangju vintage shop, oversized long-sleeve top: Second Traders

Second Traders is a warehouse-style vintage clothing store of about 1,000 pyeong (roughly 3,300 m²) in Baekseok-eup, Yangju, Gyeonggi. Instead of the ₩69,000 unlimited bag, the writer paid the flat ₩9,800 per-item price, browsed the VIVA section and picked an oversized long-sleeve top for the chilly weather. With a large parking lot and a wide range of clothes, Second Traders is an easy, low-pressure place to browse and find cheap vintage pieces.

Daegu briquette BBQ, 600g pork with cheesy scallops: Sangnok Hoegwan

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch is a briquette-grilled Korean BBQ restaurant in Goseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, near Bukgucheong Station. At dinner we grilled a 600g pork platter (dwaeji hangeun, 35,000 won), cheese scallops (17,000 won) and a king scallop (9,000 won) together over the coal briquettes, and the meat quality, generously cheese-topped seafood and friendly service all satisfied. For good-value meat and seafood in one meal, Sangnok Hoegwan Goseong Branch is a great fit.

Rainy-night Uijeongbu café with tent seats and choco Basque: Forerest

Forerest is a large café on Nogyang-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, known for its house-made Basque cheesecake. After dinner on a rainy night, the writer sat in Forerest's outdoor tent area with organic Earl Grey milk tea (6,800 won), fresh orange juice (7,800 won), Basque cheesecake (7,500 won) and chocolate Basque cheesecake (8,000 won). Verdict: anyone who loves both chocolate and Basque cheesecake should try Forerest's chocolate Basque cheesecake.

Uijeongbu seafood restaurant: octopus bibimbap, Daebak Haemulchon

Daebak Haemulchon Uijeongbu Main Branch is a seafood and bossam (boiled meat wrap) restaurant in the Sinsigaji food alley, about a 5-minute walk from Uijeongbu Station in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the Buljju Special, a set of bul-jjukkumi (fire-cooked spicy baby octopus), squid bossam and naengmyeon (cold noodles). The writer mixed the bul-jjukkumi into a bowl of rice with seaweed flakes and sesame oil, and the mul naengmyeon came as a one-person portion. With generous portions and good flavor, Daebak Haemulchon is worth recommending for family meals or group gatherings.
