Windy-day indoor view café in Gimhae: croissants with Mom at Yu Yu Yu

Yu Yu Yu is a large bakery café on Inje-ro in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, near Gaya Land and Gaya Theme Park. After hearing about Yu Yu Yu's new building, the writer went back with Mom and ordered 2 croissants, 1 almond croissant, an iced Americano and a hot Americano, then took in the green views from indoors because it was windy. With more space and rich, nutty croissants, Yu Yu Yu is a Gimhae café where you can enjoy bread and a view in one stop.

Millak-dong sashimi bar for a birthday seafood spread: Gwanganda Jjji

Gwanganda Jjji Gwangalli Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant on the 6th floor of Sanbada Hoetown in Millak-dong, Suyeong, Busan, serving a single dachi hansang (set seafood course) menu, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Gwangan Bridge (Gwangandaegyo) and Gwangalli Beach. For a birthday, the writer booked through Naver and had the ₩55,000-per-person dachi set at Gwanganda Jjji: side dishes, live octopus and raw shrimp, a mixed sashimi platter of flounder, sea bream, sole and sea bass, then crab stew and abalone porridge. Verdict: the Gwangan Bridge ocean view and generous spread made Gwanganda Jjji a satisfying birthday meal, with portions big enough to leave the writer stuffed.

Large Gimhae café for a date with Mom: 63-layer bread at Peer a Peer

Peer a Peer is a large café of about 2,000 pyeong in a converted factory in Jillye-myeon, Gimhae. The writer drove to Peer a Peer with her mom, explored the exhibition space, small library and photo zones, and tried the 63-layer bread and the red bean butter salt bread. Verdict: Peer a Peer is a spacious Gimhae café for a family outing, with plenty of room to stroll and talk together.

Korean restaurant in Gasan, Seoul: gopchang hot pot for two, Yukhwang

Yukhwang (육향) is a gomtang (beef bone soup) and hot pot Korean restaurant on the first floor of Halla One&One Tower, near Exit 8 of Gasan Digital Complex Station in Geumcheon, Seoul. The writer and her boyfriend shared a gopchang jeongol (beef intestine hot pot), added kalguksu noodles to finish, and each emptied a bowl of rice too. Yukhwang's gopchang hot pot comes in a generous portion with no gamey smell at all, making it a hearty pick for lunch or a work dinner.

Changwon eel restaurant for a summer stamina meal: Daedo Jangeo

Daedo Jangeo (대도장어) is an eel restaurant that has served the same alley across from Changwon Station in Uichang-gu, Changwon, for 32 years. Worn out by a heatwave, the writer took her mom to Daedo Jangeo for salt-grilled sea eel and eel soup; the eel comes out fully grilled over coal briquettes, with a rich smoky flavor and no fishy smell at all. Even her picky mom praised the clean dining room, making Daedo Jangeo a satisfying summer stamina meal.

Gimhae Chinese lunch with Mom, fried condensed-milk dessert: Dongbaek

Dongbaek is a Chinese restaurant with private rooms on Gaya-ro near Hwalcheon-gogae in Dongsang-dong, Gimhae. Ordering Dongbaek's lunch special course A with her mom, the writer had abalone porridge and a cold platter, yusanseul (stir-fried seafood and vegetables) with crispy fried noodles, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), yuringi (fried chicken in tangy soy sauce), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and a dessert of pineapple and fried condensed milk, in that order. Dongbaek's lunch course is generous and good value, and worth a return visit for a family gathering.

Gimhae bakery café: Shin-chan dolls and ham butter croissant, Yu Yu Yu

Yu Yu Yu (유유유, UUU) is a large two-floor bakery café on Inje-ro in Gimhae, Gyeongnam. On the 1st floor of Yu Yu Yu, the writer found dog cushions and plenty of Maenggu (Bo) and Shin-chan dolls from Crayon Shin-chan. The 2nd floor has floor-to-ceiling windows looking onto green cherry trees, and the order was a croissant, a ham butter croissant sandwich and an americano. With a big free car park, Yu Yu Yu is a good place for families, friends and couples to rest after a day out.

Gimhae kalguksu restaurant with a same-day clam rule: Seosan Dongjuk

Seosan Dongjuk Kalguksu is a clam noodle soup restaurant on Deokjeong-ro 201beon-gil in Gimhae, Gyeongnam. The restaurant posts its rule of preparing and discarding the dongjuk (Korean surf clams) the same day right outside, and takes separate orders for kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) with spicy chili and without, so each person at the table gets their own version. The dongjuk kalguksu and the ollaksae seafood pancake both came so loaded with clams that they kept turning up to the last bite.

Juchon, Gimhae gamjatang restaurant: medium pot with 2 fried rice

Ppyeodae Itneun Haejangguk Juchon Branch is a gamjatang (pork bone soup) and haejangguk (hangover soup) restaurant in Juchon, Gimhae, near Costco. Three of us stopped in after a grocery run and shared a medium gamjatang with two orders of fried rice, and the portion was generous with no gamey smell to the pork. A good choice when you want one properly filling meal.

Jinju naengmyeon and a Geumhoji lake walk for the family: Song Giwon

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch is a Jinju-style cold noodle (naengmyeon) restaurant on Modeok-ro in Jinju, Gyeongnam. A family drove an hour to share Jinju mul-naengmyeon (chilled broth noodles) and Jinju seokkeum-naengmyeon (mixed noodles), plus warm broth and kimchi from the self-serve bar. A 3.8km loop around nearby Geumhoji reservoir closed out the day, making Song Giwon an easy lunch-and-stroll outing worth the drive.

Busan jjamppong set for two and green onion kimchi: Songjeong Dol

Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant on Songjeong Gwanggeogol-ro in Haeundae, Busan, specialising in jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) served on a hot stone plate with nurungji scorched rice. Two of us ordered the set of stone-plate jjamppong at spice level 2 and aged glutinous rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and the portions were so huge we could barely finish, while the free green onion kimchi from the self-bar matched the soup perfectly. With parking right out front, Songjeong Dol Jjamppong is an easy stop after a walk on Songjeong Beach.

Lotus root in dakgangjeong at a Danyang Gugyeong Market chicken shop

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a fried chicken shop inside Danyang Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, where nurungji (crispy scorched rice) is toasted to order and mixed into the dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken). A savory smell pulled us in mid-market walk for a takeout box of the double black garlic flavor, a piece of the just-made nurungji while waiting, and a set of two black garlic makgeolli bottles for 10,000 won. Opened at home, the box held both nurungji and lotus root, a crunchy-crisp mix that kept our hands going back for more.
