Today I'm bringing a review of a Gyeongju local favorite that only the initiated seem to know about — Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang — for anyone traveling in Gyeongju or just in everyday life looking for a proper boost-food meal. As the seasons change or energy dips, the first thing that comes to mind is a warm, hearty bowl of samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup). While searching for a place with truly deep broth, locals kept recommending this spot, so I went to check it out.
Where is Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang? Address, hours and parking
Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang is located at 71 Baegnyul-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, and is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. It has its own dedicated parking lot, which made driving there convenient.

The exterior looks like an ordinary house — warm and familiar, like visiting your grandmother's home. Having stood in the same spot for so long, the building carries deep traces of time in every corner, and honestly it gives off the vibe of a real, seasoned local favorite that only insiders know about, haha.

Parking was easy since there's a dedicated lot right at the restaurant.

Inside Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang: private rooms for a family meal
The inside of Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang was much bigger than it looked from outside, which surprised me. There's a separate private room for a more intimate meal, and the regular tables are spaced generously too, so eating there felt comfortable throughout. With the space laid out so well, I thought this would be a great place for gatherings or family meals — especially for taking your parents out.
Menu and price of the lacquer-tree samgyetang

We ordered two bowls of the acanthopanax samgyetang at ₩17,000 each. They say they grow their own acanthopanax (a bristly ginseng-like root) for this dish! Using self-grown ingredients builds a lot of trust, and it just feels healthier.

Ta-da! The acanthopanax samgyetang arrived. Because of the acanthopanax, even the broth's color is different from usual. The savory aroma was wonderful.

The samgyetang comes out bubbling hot in a stone pot, and inside, along with the chicken, there's a generous helping of chewy, nutty sticky rice.

Homemade side dishes: cucumber salad and cucumber chilies
The side dishes at Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang were all neatly arranged, and every single one is homemade. Unlike the sharp, overly seasoned side dishes you often find elsewhere, these had a clean, home-cooked, lovingly made taste — perfect alongside the samgyetang.

The bright red cucumber salad in particular was delicious enough to really wake up your appetite, and dipping the crunchy cucumber-chili into ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) was so good.

How the lacquer-tree samgyetang tastes, from drumstick to broth
I started with the chicken drumstick, and the meat was so tender it slid right off the bone — moist and delicate in the mouth. Really delicious.

I also tried the leaner breast meat with a light dip of salt — not dry at all, soft, and full of that deep lacquer aroma throughout, giving it real depth of flavor.
Boiled hard in a cauldron and packed with acanthopanax, the broth was truly rich. The moment I took a sip of that deep, savory broth, my stomach settled and my whole body felt fortified — a proper boost-food experience.

I scooped up a generous spoonful of chewy sticky rice soaked in that deep broth, topped it neatly with the crisp homemade side dishes, and the combination of the broth's deep flavor with the clean, savory sides was so good that even though I was full, I couldn't put the spoon down. A local Gyeongju recommendation really is different — the broth was truly rich and it was all so delicious.

Self-serve side dish bar and coffee after the meal
The self-serve bar is run hygienically too, so if any side dish runs low, you can freely go get more without hesitation.

To finish, they even served a cup of coffee mix — the perfect ending. I'll have to come back the next time I'm visiting Gyeongju and craving something light and clean.
Final verdict on Ogajeong Gamasot Samgyetang
From the homey, welcoming exterior, you could sense the years of experience behind this place, and with the deep cauldron-boiled broth, the self-grown acanthopanax, and the flavor of the lacquer tree, this was a spot for a truly proper boost-food meal!
The harmony with the neatly homemade side dishes was excellent too, and with the spacious layout and well-appointed private room, this was a satisfying restaurant I'd love to revisit with my parents next time. Highly recommend it as a Gyeongju local favorite.
