Walking down the quiet, old-fashioned alleys typical of Hwangnidang-gil, the entrance already gives off a warm, comfortable feeling — true to the brand's slogan of "serving a tidy table filled with Gyeongju's time and seasons."

Stepping inside Hyangtaek, the wooden hanok structure, soft lighting, and sunlight filtering in warmly all came together perfectly — I fell for the scenery at first sight .. 🤎

The ceiling beams are left exposed, keeping an antique charm alive, and the whole space is filled with a poetic, lyrical mood!

The seats are spaced generously apart, so it feels comfortable and the atmosphere is great — I thought it'd be perfect not just as a Gyeongju date spot, but also for taking parents out for a proper, tidy meal!

How to cut the weekend wait with the Tabling app

Hyangtaek gets a wait on weekends, so it's best to put your name down on the Tabling app the moment you arrive at Gyeongju Station. I rented a car at Gyeongju Station and drove over to Hwangnidang-gil, and my turn lined up perfectly.

Eggplant doenjang rice bowl, 14,000 won

Hyangtaek's popular eggplant doenjang (soybean paste) rice bowl is 14,000 won.

This is the kelp vinegar that comes alongside the eggplant rice bowl! Mixing in a little at a time while stirring adds a savory depth that makes it even tastier.

Before mixing everything together, I'd recommend trying a bite with just rice + chives + eggplant + minced beef doenjang sauce piled on top! Each ingredient's own flavor really shines through.

I'm normally an eggplant lover so this fully satisfied me 🍆💜 The soft, moist texture of the eggplant with the savory saltiness of the sauce is the best. Even a friend who usually picks around eggplant grabbed a bite of mine and admitted eggplant could taste like this — and kept stealing more. Popular menu item, confirmed!!!

Yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl), 15,000 won

Hyangtaek's yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl) is 15,000 won.

Gyeongju-style yukhoe bibimbap with a strikingly fresh look ❤️ Vivid red, fresh yukhoe topped with a rich egg yolk, crisp lettuce, and plenty of julienned pear!

Break the yolk, mix it all up, and take a bite — it's not overpowering at all, just the meat's own savory flavor spreading through your mouth. Best yukhoe bibimbap I've had recently ✨

The banchan side dishes

Even the salted seafood side dish wasn't too salty and paired well with the meal, so I asked for a refill haha.

I'm guessing this is pickled gungchae (a leafy green pickle) .. it's crunchy and crisp, and pairs really well with Korean food.

Hanpan galbi (grilled short rib patties), 10,000 won

Hyangtaek's hanpan galbi is 10,000 won — a grilled short rib patty (tteokgalbi) that pairs well with the rice bowls.

I also ordered the tteokgalbi, which goes well alongside a rice bowl! It was nicely browned outside and juicy inside. The seasoning isn't too strong, so it doesn't overpower the main dish and strikes a great balance.

The restroom is located toward the back inside. It's convenient since you don't have to step outside, and men's/women's restrooms are separated!

Is Hyangtaek Gyeongju worth a visit?

If you want to step away from the crowds of Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil for a calm, tidy meal, I'd recommend Hyangtaek, a Korean restaurant right on Hwangnidang-gil! There's also a high chair on hand in the store, so families traveling with kids can eat comfortably too.
