I went to Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch (비비삼 과천본점) for a weekend lunch with my family. We shared two kinds of torim bibimbap and hot stone roe rice; I especially remember the moist, seasoned rice and the stone pot that stayed warm until the end of the meal.

What were the seats like for a family meal on the weekend?

The interior was neat and clean. It was a weekend peak time, so there were many diners, but the tables were well spaced and did not feel cramped. It was comfortable for having a meal and talking with my family.

What did we order and have on the side?

The menu centered on stone-pot rice and torim bibimbap. It included hot stone roe rice, Hwangdeung torim bibimbap with Korean beef tartare, namul, or bulgogi, along with side dishes such as tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patties) and cockle salad. There were also sets pairing mains and sides. We ordered Hwangdeung torim octopus bibimbap, Hwangdeung torim bulgogi bibimbap, and hot stone roe rice.

After ordering, we picked up white kimchi and miso soup from the self-serve bar. The white kimchi was crisp and clean-tasting, pairing well with the bibimbap, while the miso soup was warm and savory. The self-serve bar was also kept clean.

The food arrived neatly arranged. It came in hot stone pots, so we could eat it warm until the end of the meal.

How did the octopus and bulgogi torim bibimbap differ?

The Hwangdeung torim octopus bibimbap combined chewy octopus with spicy seasoning. The seasoning had soaked well into the torim rice, giving it a savory depth.

There was a generous amount of octopus, so I could fully enjoy its chewy texture. As I ate, I felt the price was not burdensome for the amount of ingredients.

The Hwangdeung torim bulgogi bibimbap added the sweetness of bulgogi to the spicy seasoning. The meat was tender, and the rice was moist rather than dry, so I enjoyed it.

What stood out about the hot stone roe rice?

The hot stone roe rice had a pleasant nutty flavor. It contained a generous amount of roe and some meat, which added flavor.

The flying fish roe popped in the mouth, and the crispy nurungji (scorched rice) added varied textures. It was a dish my mother particularly liked.

Everyone in my family was satisfied with this meal. It was fairly busy on the weekend, but the generous table spacing made it comfortable to share a warm meal with my parents.
