Whenever I plan a trip to Sokcho, there's one course I can never skip! Jungang Market, packed with food!

Especially in Sokcho, I always end up eating squid sundae (stuffed squid) and abai sundae (stuffed intestine sausage), plus sweet-and-spicy chicken gangjeong (Korean fried chicken). Today I'm introducing a Sokcho Jungang Market spot where you can get all of that in one place 🤗

There are so many stalls inside Sokcho Jungang Market that it's easy to get overwhelmed deciding where to go, but the place I visited again this trip — after visiting last year too — is the already-famous Ddogi-ne Twigim, once featured on a self-made-millionaire TV show 💡 It's located on the 1st floor of the market's shopping arcade, unit 5.

Usually at a market you have to hunt down a separate chicken gangjeong stall and a separate sundae stall, lining up twice and burning a lot of time, but Ddogi-ne Twigim sells all the Sokcho market classics — various sundae and chicken gangjeong — plus a wide range of fried snacks, jeon, and snow crab ramyeon, all in one spot. Great for cutting down on walking around 👍

What we ordered at Ddogi-ne Twigim and what the shop is like

This time at Ddogi-ne Twigim we ordered the nurungji squid sundae + abai sundae set, and a half-order of mild deodeok chicken gangjeong. Everything here is fried and grilled fresh to order, so it takes a little time.

While waiting, I noticed the staff kept cleaning every corner of the shop — probably because it's a constant frying environment 🫧 Seeing how much they cared about cleanliness put me much more at ease, and even while busy they were kind and welcoming, which made the visit feel even better 😊

We ordered takeout, but there's also indoor seating for eating in, and it's dog-friendly too, so travelers with pets can visit comfortably 🐶

Honest taste review: still good after it cooled

After finishing packing everything up and getting back to the lodging, we finally unveiled our full Sokcho Jungang Market spread! We'd spent extra time browsing the market first, so the food had cooled a bit, but it was still delicious 👏👏

Deodeok chicken gangjeong, half-order, mild

Usually at markets, chicken gangjeong is only sold as a whole chicken, which is too much for two people and often ends up leftover — but Ddogi-ne Twigim offers half-orders, which is perfect for travelers who want to sample a bit of everything from Sokcho Jungang Market 👍

I went with the mild version, and the sauce wasn't too spicy at all — even kids could eat it — sweet and moreish. The sliced deodeok (bellflower root) mixed in gave it a subtle, almost elegant herbal aroma that made it a real standout 🍗

Nurungji squid sundae and abai sundae

The sundae set had absolutely none of that characteristic strong smell, and got nuttier the more you chewed. The nurungji squid sundae I had was coated with rice grains on the outside, fried crispy like scorched rice (nurungji) — the texture is exactly my thing 🫶
