Gizzard shad sashimi and spicy fish stew in Yeoksam: Sokcho Ojingeo

In short

Sokcho Ojingeo Eosijang Yeoksam Branch is a sashimi restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, along the road from Yeoksam Station toward Yeoksam Lucky. The order was the smallest size of gizzard shad sashimi, in season in autumn, plus a spicy stew made from fish trimmings with hand-torn dumpling noodles added, and the self-serve bar of kimchi, wrap vegetables and seaweed soup was free to use. The nutty bone-in gizzard shad slices and the deep, spicy stew broth both made for a satisfying dinner.

Sokcho Ojingeo Eosijang Yeoksam Branch is a well-known sashimi restaurant near Yeoksam Station, on the way from the station to Yeoksam Lucky. It's famous as a Yeoksam Station favorite and always packed with people, so I went to check it out haha~^^

Big dining hall and folding-door terrace seating

Sokcho Ojingeo Eosijang Yeoksam Branch has a really spacious hall, and with the folding doors open, it feels like an outdoor terrace restaurant. The moment I walked in, I was surprised by how large the hall was and how many customers there were. It felt like everyone in Yeoksam-dong was there~

Live-fish sashimi you can order for one person

Sokcho Ojingeo Eosijang Yeoksam Branch has an incredibly diverse menu. What I liked was that raw fish sashimi like mullet, halibut, and rockfish can be ordered in single portions.

There's also mackerel, salmon, thinly sliced flounder, red seabream, and sea bass sashimi. Plus assorted platters if you want to try several kinds, and Sokcho-style sets that live up to the restaurant's 'Sokcho fish market' name~

Besides sashimi, there are seafood side dishes like sea squirt, spoon worm and sea cucumber, plus Sokcho seafood pancake, fried shrimp, Sokcho squid sausage, grilled sailfin sandfish, and Andong-style salted mackerel — so there's no need to worry even if you're bringing someone who isn't a fan of raw fish.

There's also a good range of meal options, like raw fish rice bowl, Sokcho king pork cutlet, salmon sushi, clam kalguksu (noodle soup), bone-in fish stew, and octopus shabu-shabu.♡

There were so many delicious-looking options that it was hard to choose, but of course I went with fall's seasonal gizzard shad in the end♡

You order using the tablet on the table~ The fall specials this season are gizzard shad sashimi, grilled gizzard shad, seasoned gizzard shad, plus salt-grilled prawns, raw prawns, butter-grilled shrimp, flying fish roe cuttlefish sashimi, and blanched cuttlefish. You can really soak up the fall season haha.

Autumn gizzard shad sashimi: generous even in the smallest size

Even though I ordered the smallest size of gizzard shad sashimi, the portion was surprisingly large. After ordering and taking a trip to the self-serve bar and chatting a bit, the dishes came out quickly. Here's the gizzard shad sashimi and the bone-in fish stew♡ Nicely sliced and full of freshness.

The basic side dishes include lettuce wraps, aged kimchi, and macaroni salad.

I also tried the warm seaweed soup — it was surprisingly rich and tasty, so I kept going back for more haha.

Gizzard shad sashimi~♡ Fall means gizzard shad, right? It's packed with nutty richness from the fat that builds up this time of year. I like both grilled and raw, but today I went with the sashimi.

Gizzard shad is thinly sliced with the bones still in. It comes pre-sliced like this, ready to dip in vinegared chili sauce and pop in your mouth~ My friend dipped hers in soy sauce instead.

It fills your mouth with a nutty richness and soft texture. It has a different charm from halibut or rockfish sashimi, which is why I look forward to fall every year haha.

Wrapping the gizzard shad sashimi in a perilla leaf with ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) is also delicious~ Great freshness, genuinely tasty — you should really come to Sokcho Eosijang Yeoksam Branch for gizzard shad sashimi haha.

Spicy fish-trimmings stew with hand-torn dumpling noodles

When you add dumpling noodles to the bone-in fish stew at Sokcho Ojingeo Eosijang Yeoksam Branch, it really comes out full to the brim. I ordered the stew to go with a drink.

I love dumplings so I added the noodles, but wow~ I didn't expect it to come out this generously loaded♡

There's plenty of radish, water dropwort, and fish in there, and the broth is really rich and tasty. It's spicy enough to be a great side for soju, and also great over a bowl of rice~

Fully cooked dumpling noodles scooped up from the stew

The dumplings were cooked through perfectly, chewy and soft with just the right seasoning — a real standout. (Highly recommend adding the dumpling noodles haha.) It was truly a delicious and enjoyable dinner.
