Jongno aged sashimi with amberjack seaweed wraps: Suksseong Susan

In short

Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is an aged sashimi restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Youth Street strip (Jeolmeum-ui Geori) between Jonggak and Jongno 3-ga stations in Seoul. On a date night here the order was the small aged sashimi platter for two at 69,000 won, salt-grilled shrimp at 35,000 won and beef brisket rose pasta at 23,000 won, and the standout was amberjack topped with monkfish liver, radish sprouts and wasabi, wrapped in seaweed. The aged sashimi was good enough to convert a longtime live-fish sashimi fan, and since Suksseong Susan is corkage-free, the next visit comes with a bottle in hand.

Today I'm introducing a Jongno sashimi restaurant near Jongak Station — an aged sashimi spot perfect for a date night: Suksseong Susan.

Suksseong Susan in three honest lines

  • The aged sashimi is insane!!!
  • The monkfish liver is unbelievably good
  • A private date-night spot

Finding Suksseong Susan: 3rd floor on Jonggak's Youth Street

Gangneung rooftop sign on the way up to Suksseong Susan

Located midway between Jongak Station and Jongno 3-ga Station, this Jongno-gu aged sashimi spot sits on the 3rd floor of a building on Jongak's Young Street. On the way up I was genuinely thrown off by a rooftop sign for 'Gangneung.' Wait, Gangneung?? A rooftop?? Why is this here??

Right as you walk in, there's a fridge for aging fish and a tank full of fresh seafood. A genuine Jongno aged sashimi spot.

Spacious 4-person tables in the Suksseong Susan dining hall

The interior was better than I expected — very clean and structured for privacy. There were plenty of roomy 4-person tables, all with partitions, which kept things private and comfortable.

Window-side date seating at Suksseong Susan

It felt like exactly the kind of place made for a date, or even a blind date where you want to actually talk. I was there on a date myself and really liked the space. There was also fun in watching out the window.

Suksseong Susan menu and the corkage-free policy

The menu was more varied than I expected — seasonal dishes, the main aged sashimi, plus a wide range of seafood and side dishes. The drink selection was great too, and best of all, this place is corkage-free!!! Amazing.

Table set before ordering at Suksseong Susan

Since we came to Suksseong Susan, the aged sashimi was non-negotiable. We ordered the aged sashimi, the seasonal salt-grilled shrimp, and a beef brisket rose pasta to fill up on carbs.

The aged sashimi at ₩69,000. It looks delicious just from the visuals. A real plus of Suksseong Susan is getting to taste aged sashimi from a variety of fish species 👍

Red seabream

Aged red seabream sashimi at Suksseong Susan

Red seabream. The owner told us to eat this one first, so that was my very first bite. The umami was excellent, and that distinct skin texture on red seabream was just right.

Amberjack

Aged amberjack sashimi at Suksseong Susan

Amberjack. This was the fish where I realized just how different aged sashimi really is. I'd had amberjack as live-fish sashimi just a few days earlier, and the texture and flavor here were completely different — personally, I preferred the aged version. And the combo Gemini suggested — amberjack with monkfish liver, radish sprouts, and wasabi, wrapped in seaweed — was the single best bite of the night. You have to try it 👍

Salmon and bluefin tuna

Both the salmon and the bluefin tuna were incredibly smooth and delicious. Between the two, I preferred the bluefin tuna for its stronger umami. Perfect drinking food 😋

Jeomseongeo (croaker)

Chewy jeomseong fish aged sashimi

Jeomseong fish. Chewy and dense in a great way, with a subtle, savory richness.

A glass of soju alongside aged sashimi

Aged sashimi with soju — ahh, perfect. This is love 😊

Salt-grilled shrimp

Sorry to the shrimp, but... wow, I haven't seen shrimp this fresh and flopping around in ages. Felt a little bad.

But it was delicious. Plump, springy shrimp that went perfectly with the drinks.

Beef brisket rose pasta

Spicy beef brisket rose pasta at Suksseong Susan

Beef brisket rose pasta. This was the spicy version — about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, maybe a bit spicier. My first bite was like, wow, why is this so good??? Way better than I expected for a rose pasta. When you're drinking, you've got to fill up on carbs too 😋

Amberjack, monkfish liver, radish sprouts, wasabi, and seaweed wrap combo

The winning combo: amberjack, monkfish liver and seaweed

The absolute winner: amberjack + monkfish liver + radish sprouts + wasabi + seaweed. I discovered this combo by showing Gemini a photo of the aged sashimi and asking for a recommended way to eat it — and it's insane! I never knew monkfish liver could taste this good. All the umami flavors harmonize and somehow amplify each other even more. Ugh, just thinking about it makes me want to eat it again 😋

Is Suksseong Susan worth it? Final verdict

Closing image for the Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch review

A Jongno aged sashimi restaurant, a sashimi bar on Jongak's Young Street, and a solid date-night spot — Suksseong Susan is a Jongno aged sashimi place with a private setup that's great for dates.

True to its specialty, the aged sashimi was outstanding, and this is the place that taught me the combo of aged sashimi and monkfish liver is out of this world. I used to be firmly on Team Live-Fish Sashimi, but visiting Suksseong Susan shifted that opinion a bit. Aged sashimi is delicious!!! Since it's corkage-free, next time I'll bring some good liquor and go back 😋
