Gangneung Korean restaurant with beef tripe sundubu hot pot: Matdeurin

In short

Matdeurin Sundubu Haejangguk & Gamjatang is a Korean restaurant near Ojukheon in Gangneung, Gangwon. We tried its 35,000-won small beef tripe hot pot with soft tofu and soybean pulp, plus chewy sundae and house-made kimchi. Verdict: a hearty, generously portioned meal even my tofu-avoiding husband loved.

Today I visited Matdeurin Sundubu Haejangguk & Gamjatang (맛드린 순두부해장국&감자탕), a great spot near Ojukheon in Gangneung!

Daily 08:30–22:00 (last order 21:20)

Spacious parking and a roomy dining room

Outside the restaurant

Matdeurin Sundubu Haejangguk & Gamjatang has an incredibly large parking area, which is so nice because there is absolutely no need to worry about parking!

Outdoor price board outside Matdeurin

Even better, there is an outdoor price board so you can check the menu and prices before going in!

Inside the restaurant

Spacious seating inside Matdeurin
Group seating inside Matdeurin

The inside was as spacious and pleasant as the parking lot! I was surprised all over again by how big it was as soon as I walked in, haha. There were plenty of seats, from four-person tables to group tables where lots of people can sit together. The tables were nicely spaced too, so it was comfortable for a meal. It looked good for families, friends traveling together, or a gathering with a larger group!

Menu beside the counter

I took a photo of the menu beside the counter, but a toothpick got in the way—what? Haha.

Once you settle in, there is a handy kiosk right at the table, so you can order and pay all in one go!

  • 1 plate of side sundae (Korean blood sausage)
  • 1 bowl of rice

The self-service station and side dishes

Self-service station

Self-service station with kimchi and kkakdugi

There is a self-service station too! It had house-made kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), onions, and peppers >_< Spoiler: my husband loved the kimchi here so, so much that he got a refill..

Gangneung souvenirs and liquor display

They also sell Gangneung souvenirs! There was a selection of Gangneung liquors, so it could be nice to pick up a souvenir while eating here!

Basic side dishes of kimchi, kkakdugi, and soy dipping sauce

This is the basic table setting! Kkakdugi, kimchi, small plates, and a soy dipping sauce! Mix the sauce well like this, then portion it into your own little dish!

The water and cups are attached to the wall like this, haha. At first they were not on the table, so I wondered where they were—then there they were, right on the side wall, haha.

The kkakdugi and kimchi.. Like I said earlier, they were so delicious that we got a refill. When my husband did, he asked the owner whether they made the kimchi themselves because it was so good, haha. They said they do make it themselves! He said he could finish a whole bowl of rice with just the kimchi....

Beef tripe hot pot with soft tofu and soybean pulp

A pot of soft tofu and soybean-pulp beef tripe hot pot

Ta-da, our order arrived! The soft tofu and soybean pulp were piled on separately. The chives and mushrooms looked so delicious ㅠㅠㅠ

Let it come to a good bubbling boil! When I lifted it slightly, I could see it was packed with ingredients. It was full of king oyster mushrooms too!

There was lots of beef tripe in here too. This was the ₩35,000 small size, but the portion was seriously large. I think it would easily feed three adults!

Can you see how generously filled the tripe is? It was not just empty pieces of tripe—it was rich, clean-tasting beef tripe with no smell, so I could enjoy it without feeling overwhelmed!

Beef tripe and offal in the hot pot
Hot-pot offal dipped in sauce

The chewy offal was so good too ㅠ_ㅠ You all know it is absolutely delicious when you dunk it deeply in the sauce, right? Haha.

This sundubu soybean-pulp beef tripe hot pot gets tastier the longer it boils! It was so hot that I served myself a manageable amount on a small plate >_<

As we were taking bite after bite, the plate of sundae we ordered as a side arrived!

Plate of side sundae

This is chewy sundae, perfect as a side! My husband and I really love sundae, and when it was sitting right there on the side menu, we simply could not not order it!

A plate of chewy sundae as a side dish

Such plump, delicious sundae,,,, I really recommend adding it as a side here ㅠㅠ

Chewy sundae eaten with salt

Sundae is best in its pure form: team salt >_< haha. People from other regions dip it in chojang (sweet vinegared chili sauce) or ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), but for me it has to be salt or salted shrimp? Haha. I do like chojang and ssamjang too, though,, haha.

A broth even my bean-disliking husband enjoyed

From the pillowy soft tofu and nutty soybean pulp to the beef tripe, offal, and nicely textured mushrooms! Matdeurin is a great Ojukheon-area spot in Gangneung. They recently opened a second location in Gyodong Taekji too. It is wonderful that you can enjoy this delicious, great-value tripe hot pot at two locations in Gangneung >_< !

Hot pot with soft tofu and soybean pulp

I personally really love soft tofu and soybean pulp, while my husband is not much of a tofu or beans person, so I did wonder whether it would suit his taste, haha. (Though if it did not, I could just eat it all, so it was fine.) But would you believe it... he enjoyed it even more than I did!

Rich, thick soybean-pulp hot-pot broth

He kept ladling up the broth, saying the soybean pulp made it much richer, thicker, and tastier >_< I already love this kind of nutty, thick broth, so I was eating it thinking, yes, this is exactly my kind of thing~ But hearing even my husband, who does not really like tofu or beans, say it was delicious made me proud! Haha~

Hot pot enjoyed with kimchi

A hot, spicy hot pot like this really needs delicious kimchi and kkakdugi alongside it, haha. The sundubu beef tripe hot pot was generous and the broth was rich, making for a wonderfully filling meal. The restaurant is spacious too, so it looked good for families or groups eating together!

If you are looking for a hot, satisfying meal in Gangneung, I think you should try the sundubu beef tripe hot pot :) They also sell gamjatang (pork bone soup), and I want to try that next time! The house-made fresh pork cutlet looked delicious tooꔛ I am so happy to have found another great restaurant this time :)
