Siheung octopus restaurant for a Saturday family dinner: Maepsi Nakji

Maepsi Nakji Mulwang Reservoir Main Branch is a stir-fried octopus (nakji bokkeum) restaurant in Siheung, Gyeonggi, at the entrance of the Mulwang Lake traditional food village, right behind Starbucks Mulwang Lake. At a Saturday evening family dinner, we had two servings of Maepsi stone-plate octopus (15,000 won per person) and clam soup (16,000 won). The adjustable spice level, the unlimited self-bar with nurungji (scorched rice), rice and soft tofu, and a pork cutlet for kids made Maepsi Nakji a good fit for dining with parents and children. Maepsi Nakji serves octopus, a traditional energy-boosting food, at good value, and I will definitely go back.

Sanbon octopus claypot rice hotter than Shin Ramyun: Dongyang Sotbap

Dongyang Sotbap Sanbon (동양솥밥 산본점) is a Korean claypot rice (sotbap) restaurant on the 2nd floor of a central shopping building by Sanbon Station in Gunpo, Gyeonggi. On a return visit with a daughter on school break, while waiting for a dermatology appointment in Sanbon, the writer had spicy (辛) minari octopus claypot rice (₩13,900), Namdo cockle claypot rice (₩12,900) and mini menbosha (shrimp toast, ₩5,900). For a low-spice eater the minari octopus claypot rice was hotter than Shin Ramyun but deliciously so, the cockle claypot rice stayed generous to the last spoonful, and the partitioned seats make Dongyang Sotbap Sanbon a good spot to eat alone too.
