My boyfriend and I went to Masan wanting a good dinner, and while looking around we found a place that grills meat over open charcoal flame. That's Shashlik Masan Branch.

We found it while searching for a good Masan barbecue restaurant, and ended up having prime rib steak, pork belly-neck shashlik, and finally shashlik fried rice.

The meat comes out ready to eat without grilling it yourself, and the charcoal aroma was so strong I was excited even before taking a bite.

What is the atmosphere like? A campground feel

What we ordered at Shashlik Masan Branch

That day we chose prime rib steak, pork belly-neck shashlik, and finally shashlik fried rice.

The menu had a wide range of meats — chicken, pork, beef, and even lamb — each with photos and descriptions, which made it easy to choose.

True to its reputation as a good Masan barbecue restaurant, there was a wide variety of meat to choose from depending on your taste.

Prime rib steak: chewy and worth the price

First up was the prime rib steak.

The first thing I noticed with the first bite was how chewy the texture was.

The more I chewed, the more that distinctive meaty texture came through, and I really enjoyed it.

It also looked great — thick cuts that meat lovers would appreciate.

Pork belly-and-neck shashlik with deep charcoal smoke

Next was the pork belly-neck shashlik.

Pork belly-neck shashlik infused with charcoal aroma

This dish made me let out an involuntary "wow..." the moment it hit my mouth.

The meat was so infused with charcoal aroma that the smell spread through my whole mouth the second I bit into it. Since it's grilled directly over open charcoal flame, you get the full smoky flavor without having to grill it yourself.

The prime rib had a great chewy texture, while the pork belly-neck shashlik had a strong charcoal aroma — the two dishes were clearly different in their appeal.

Four sauces: garlic, mustard, chili and teriyaki

There are also several sauces to enjoy with the meat. Garlic, mustard, chili, and teriyaki let you choose according to your taste, so even the same meat could taste a little different each time.

Since you can have both steak and shashlik here, there's a wide range of options for anyone looking for Western food in Masan.

Shashlik fried rice to finish, with the spice level adjusted

After finishing most of the meat, we asked for the shashlik fried rice.

The fried rice is made using the leftover ingredients, and it comes topped with plenty of cheese.

We were told the fried rice is usually a bit spicy, so we mentioned ahead of time that we really can't handle spicy food. We asked them to make it as mild as possible, and they adjusted it so well that even someone who really can't handle spice could eat it.

With plenty of cheese, the savory flavor really came through, and it was a great way to end the meal after all that meat.

Review event: roasting marshmallows at the campfire

Shashlik Masan Branch also had a review event. We could choose one of fries, ade, or the monthly event.

The prime rib steak had a great chewy texture, and the pork belly-neck shashlik especially stood out for how the charcoal aroma burst through the moment it hit my mouth.

The shashlik fried rice we had at the end was also adjusted to our taste for spice, so we could eat it comfortably, and the generous cheese made it a fitting finish.
