Riverview BBQ in Changwon for pork shashlik with chicken thigh add-on

In short

Shashlik Masan Branch is a riverview charcoal shashlik restaurant on Deokdong-nam 1-gil in Masanhappo-gu, Changwon. Two people shared the basic pork shashlik with a chicken thigh half add-on, followed by cheese fried rice and watermelon punch. The meat was good, but the outdoor bonfire is what stuck in memory longest.

Main photo of Shashlik Masan Branch in Gapo, Masan

I went to Shashlik Masan Branch over in the Gapo area of Masan. What I ordered was the basic pork shashlik plus a chicken thigh half add-on. My girlfriend and I split it, and the portion was plenty for two.

The meat was great, but what really stuck with me was that you can watch the bonfire while you eat. It's also a pet-friendly Masan spot, since dogs are allowed per the store's policy. Let's follow along with the photos again today.

Where Shashlik Masan Branch is and its hours

I'm hungry. Where's Shashlik? Found it — Shashlik.

Shashlik Masan Branch is at 7 Deokdong-nam 1-gil, Masanhappo-gu, Changwon, Gyeongnam. Hours run 11:00–22:00, and it's closed every Tuesday.

So this is the way in. There's a passage leading inside toward the shashlik area. Let's park and head up.

Where do you park?

After arriving and heading inside, there's a dedicated parking lot. Even when I visited there were several cars already there, but plenty of spots remained.

Stairs leading up to the 2nd floor

After parking, we head up to the 2nd floor. I wonder how pretty it'll be up there. Let's go find out.

A river view greets you on the 2nd floor

Climbing one floor was tiring, so let's look up at the sky for a second. This is a riverview restaurant.

The view is amazing. And there's a hammock. I briefly considered taking a nap here before eating.

The outdoor bonfire space

I never understood why people love staring at fire — until now. I tried it for the first time here, and I just found myself zoning out at it.

Outdoor campfire bonfire space

My girlfriend's feet seemed cold, so she naturally drifted toward the fire. I guess that's why they call it 'fire-staring' — bulmeong.

The interior mood and seating

Having looked around outside, let's head in now.

Decorative props placed around the restaurant

There are little props scattered around too. We came for the food, but there's actually a lot to look at.

A princess mirror covered in flowers seemed to call out, "take a photo before you go." This middle-aged guy just walked on by, though, haha.

If you open the curtain, there's a slightly more private seating area inside.

Basic pork shashlik + chicken thigh half

It finally arrived. What we ordered today was the basic pork shashlik plus a chicken thigh half add-on. The basic pork shashlik is ₩25,000, and the chicken thigh half add-on is ₩12,500. We split it between two people and it was more than enough.

Let's take a slow look. Chicken and pork come out together with mushrooms, bell pepper, garlic, and onion. The balance of protein and fiber is amazing. Let's dig in.

Even while eating, there's fire to stare at. In my book, this place is the holy land of bulmeong. There's a flame underneath that keeps the food warm the whole time you're eating.

Sauces, jalapeños, and pickles

Various sauces, jalapeños, and pickles. Plus a water bottle. Let's try one piece of meat at a time.

The fries we got as part of a review event show up too. There was already plenty to eat, and now there's even more.

How Onion Ajae eats it

One piece of pineapple. One piece of broccoli. Jalapeño, bell pepper, and fries too.

Whoa, we already finished everything. But I'm still hungry.

Finishing with cheese fried rice and watermelon punch

Cheese fried rice served already stir-fried

So it's time for fried rice. Cheese fried rice is ₩5,000 per serving. When you order it, they fry it for you — no need to do it yourself. My stomach was full, but my spoon still wasn't off duty.

Lastly, watermelon punch showed up too. But... I forgot to take a photo. Oops. I only realized after happily munching through the watermelon that I hadn't photographed it.

Just as we were about to leave, it felt a little too soon to just walk out. So we sat by the fire once more. Meat, then fried rice, then watermelon, and finally back to staring at the fire. That's really all for today.

Onion Ajae's final verdict

This is a shashlik spot in Masan's Gapo area where we went for the meat and ended up staying for the bonfire. We added chicken thigh to the pork shashlik and split it between two, which was plenty, and it was fun picking out one piece of meat or vegetable at a time.

But what stayed with me most was the bonfire. I watched the fire before eating, while eating, and again before leaving. This place really is a fire-staring hotspot.
