Yangsan sushi lunch: Special vs Premium sets with soba, Shirokuma

I was looking for lunch in Yangsan and got a craving for good sushi, so I headed to Shirokuma in Mulgeum-eup.

Where Shirokuma is in Mulgeum, Yangsan, and what we ordered

Shirokuma is located on the ground floor at 11-5 Hwahap 4-gil, Mulgeum-eup, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. It's a great spot for anyone looking for lunch around Mulgeum or searching for a sushi restaurant in Yangsan.

This time I visited at lunch and tried the Special sushi set and the Premium sushi set together, along with the soba (buckwheat noodles).

Since Shirokuma is a ground-floor shop on Hwahap 4-gil in Mulgeum-eup, it's easy to find. The atmosphere isn't intimidating at all for a casual lunch of sushi, so it was a comfortable, light meal.

What is the dining room at Shirokuma like?

Walking into Shirokuma, the first thing I noticed was the overall warm, wood-tone interior. The tables are neatly arranged and the atmosphere is relaxed, making it easy to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

You might expect a sushi place to feel a bit cold and formal, but Shirokuma felt comfortable, maybe thanks to those wood-tone tables.

What we ordered that day was the Special sushi set and the Premium sushi set. Soba comes included with the sets, so we ate it alongside the sushi.

What comes in the Special and Premium sushi sets

When the sushi arrived, there were so many kinds that it was fun just to look at first. Each plate came neatly arranged with several types of sushi, all with different colors, ingredients and toppings — it looked delicious just to see.

From white fish to salmon, tuna and shrimp, there was a wide variety to pick through one by one. Each piece had a slightly different taste and texture, which made trying them all the more enjoyable.

The salmon sushi in particular had a soft, savory taste I really liked. With the sauce and toppings on top, it felt like a different experience from plain salmon sushi.

The tuna sushi was clean and easy to eat, and the white fish sushi was light, making it a good change of pace among all the other pieces. The eggplant sushi felt really fresh too.

Ordering the Special and Premium sushi sets together gave us even more variety, which made me think this would be a great option for a family or group visit where everyone can share different kinds of sushi.

How was the soba included with each set?

The soba we ate alongside the sushi paired really well too. When you're eating sushi for a while, you sometimes need something to cleanse your palate, and a sip of the cool soba broth did exactly that. Topped with dried seaweed flakes and green onion, and with a bit of wasabi stirred in, it had a nice sharp kick that went well with the sushi.

Personally, I think sushi and soba are just a good combination. Adding soba instead of eating sushi alone made for a much more filling lunch.

Above all, the sushi that day came in so many varieties that it was fun to slowly taste our way through the plate. If you love sushi, comparing the Special and Premium sets side by side is worth trying.
