In short
Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch is a charcoal-grilled freshwater eel restaurant in Jungnang, Seoul, a five-minute walk from both Sagajeong Station and Myeonmok Station. With group tables and a self-serve bar, Cheonsangae Jangeoga works well for family dinners and gatherings.

The storefront and the weekday lunch set
Here's the exterior of Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch. It's right on the street, so it's easy to spot as you walk by! Overall the exterior felt clean and tidy.

The entrance area was wide and easy to walk into, and it had a bit of an upscale vibe so my expectations went way up haha. It was also really clean, which I liked.

Apparently you can get the set at a cheaper price on weekday lunches, so it seems like a good place to visit for a weekday lunch too.
Cheonsangae Jangeoga's menu and the eel set for two we ordered

They had grilled eel set menus by number of people, along with an eel soup set. There were also sides like bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and janchi guksu, so kids who don't eat eel would have something to eat too if you're out for a family meal.
We ordered the charcoal-grilled snow mushroom wild ginseng eel 2-person set. Besides the eel, the 2-person set came with wild ginseng cultivated root, snow mushroom, Tongyeong oyster jeotgal (salted oysters), sushi rice, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), grilled potato, and nurungji soup (scorched rice soup)!!
Inside Cheonsangae Jangeoga: tables, group room and self-serve bar

Once inside, the space felt bigger than expected and had a clean overall vibe! Four-person tables are set up in the main area, and there's a group space in the back for several people to sit together, so it seemed great for family gatherings or work dinners.

With an eel restaurant, I expected it to be a bit chaotic or smoky from the charcoal, but the interior was kept so clean that I felt really comfortable the whole meal.
And if you keep walking further in—

—there's more spacious seating, which seems great for a family meal, a company dinner, or a club gathering.

There's also a separate self-serve bar, so I could grab extra lettuce wraps or side dishes myself without feeling awkward about it — so convenient. It was kept really clean too!
How was the charcoal-grilled snow mushroom wild ginseng eel set for two?
Today's dish: the charcoal-grilled snow mushroom wild ginseng eel 2-person set (wild ginseng cultivated root, snow mushroom, Tongyeong oyster jeotgal, sushi rice, doenjang jjigae, grilled potato, nurungji soup).

Can you tell just from the charcoal that it's good charcoal? I could tell.
Here are the side dishes. Ginger, pickled perilla leaves, pickled chili shreds, chives, onion, garlic, wild ginseng cultivated root, and more — everything good for you gathered in one place! Everything except the wild ginseng cultivated root is refillable!
Dipping the eel in teriyaki sauce mixed with cultivated wild ginseng root
My beloved teriyaki sauce. I refilled it from the self-serve bar three whole times. The staff told me to mix the wild ginseng cultivated root into the teriyaki sauce? Dipping the grilled eel into sauce mixed with wild ginseng cultivated root was paradise!

First the charcoal fire got going and the eel was put on the grill, and the staff grilled it for us themselves? Since they grilled it for us, I didn't have to worry about anything and could just relax and wait.
As the eel cooked, a subtle charcoal aroma soaked in, and it looked so appetizing even just visually. The eel's surface was nicely browned while the inside stayed moist and tender. Totally crispy outside, juicy inside!!! The eel's naturally savory flavor combined with the charcoal aroma made it clear why they use charcoal.

Sushi rice and salted oyster! They put the eel tail on top so we could eat it as eel sushi. I usually can't eat oysters because of the fishy smell, but these were fresh and had no fishy taste at all, so I devoured them!

Here's the doenjang jjigae. My mom said it tasted like homemade doenjang, not store-bought. It was nicely spicy and went great with rice — very satisfying!

The janchi guksu we added, plus grilled potato and nurungji soup
The janchi guksu we ordered as an extra!! You absolutely have to order this. The portion was almost enough for two, and the broth was clean and light, pairing perfectly with the eel. There was a bit too much flake topping on top so it had a slightly strong smell — next time I'll ask them to leave it off.
Once the charcoal's set aside and the potatoes are done, they give you one baby potato per person. Maybe because it's cooked over good charcoal, the potato was wonderfully fluffy... dipped in teriyaki sauce, it was so good.

To finish, they bring out nurungji soup, and even though I was already full... I ended up eating two whole bowls. Warm and hearty, a perfect way to end the meal.
Is Cheonsangae Jangeoga worth it for a family gathering?
If you're looking for a great eel restaurant in Jungnang, I genuinely, strongly recommend Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch! Along with the eel, you get wild ginseng cultivated root, snow mushroom, salted oyster, doenjang jjigae, grilled potato, and nurungji, so just ordering the 2-person set gave us a really full, satisfying meal — and above all, it was delicious.
You get domestic freshwater eel grilled over real charcoal, and since the staff grills it for you, you can enjoy it without worrying about burning it. The place is clean and has group seating, so it works for a meal with a partner, a family outing, or taking your parents out for a nourishing meal. Highly recommend if you want a hearty eel meal near Sagajeong.
