Suwon Hommaesil friends' lunch: galbi doenjang hot pot at Ok Doenjang
In short
Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch (옥된장 수원호매실점) is a Korean restaurant specializing in doenjang (soybean paste) hot pot and suyuk (boiled pork) on Geumgok-ro in the Hommaesil area of Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. Over lunch with friends, the writer ordered Ok Doenjang's signature Janchisang (Feast Table) set for 4, which came with a doenjang hot pot with galbi and wood ear mushrooms, plus seasoned squid (ojingeo chomuchim), and added a squid and minari pancake. The broth at Ok Doenjang is savory rather than salty or spicy, making it an easy choice for office lunches or family meals.

I was trying to decide on lunch with the friends I usually eat with, and we ended up at Ok Doenjang (옥된장) Suwon Hommaesil Branch. I'd often heard that the doenjang jeongol (soybean paste hot pot) and suyuk (boiled pork) here were great, so I went with high hopes, and the ingredients were fresher than I expected and you could feel the care in every dish. The deep flavor of the broth, the generous portions and the side dishes all left nothing to complain about, and I enjoyed the whole meal. By the end I naturally thought, "I have to come back," so here I am writing about it.

Location and lunchtime atmosphere of Ok Doenjang Hommaesil
Ok Doenjang sits in the heart of the Hommaesil commercial area, and its clean exterior catches your eye even as you walk past. Right from the front you can see wording that says it specializes in doenjang hot pot and suyuk, and the entrance already feels warm and homey. Customers kept coming in as lunchtime went on, so it was clear this is a place many people already visit.

We went in together, found a table and ordered. We wondered what to eat for a while, but picking the signature dish seemed like the best idea.

Feast Table set for 4: doenjang hot pot with galbi and wood ear mushrooms
We ordered Ok Doenjang's signature Feast Table set for 4. When the food arrived a little later, the look of it alone made us gasp.

It was packed with big galbi (ribs), tender meat, assorted vegetables and mushrooms, and wood ear mushrooms too, so it looked hearty just sitting there. Best of all, the moment I took a spoonful of the broth, the deep, rich flavor really struck me.

It isn't harshly salty or spicy; the savory character of the doenjang comes through, so anyone can enjoy it without worry. The meat wasn't tough but tender, and even better with the broth, and you could really feel how fresh each ingredient was.

It felt like a place that uses good ingredients without holding back, and maybe that's why the overall quality of the food was so high.
Side dishes and seasoned squid
The side dishes that came with it were neat and appetizing too.

The set also came with seasoned squid (chomuchim, squid in a tangy vinegar dressing), and it tasted fresh.

How does the squid minari pancake pair with the hot pot?
The squid and minari (water dropwort) pancake we ordered alongside the hot pot was really satisfying too. Plenty of minari kept its fragrant flavor alive, and there was generous squid, so it was fun to chew. Crispy outside and moist inside, it was a perfect match for the hot pot. It was pan-fried light, without feeling greasy, so we kept reaching for it, and my friends all said it was delicious and didn't put their chopsticks down. The deep broth of the doenjang hot pot and the crunch of the minari pancake go together so well that ordering both should make the meal even better.

Is it good for office lunches and family meals?
What I liked most while eating was not just the taste but the overall atmosphere. The staff were friendly, and the food was served neatly, so it was a pleasant meal. It was lunchtime and there were lots of customers, but the food came out fast and we didn't wait long. I thought it would work well enough for a family meal, a get-together with friends or an office lunch.
These days I think the freshness of the ingredients matters even more than flavor, and Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil deserves high marks there. The broth stayed clean to the end, there was no gamey smell at all from the meat, and even the basic side dishes were tidy, so I was very satisfied overall. It felt like I'd had a proper meal for the first time in a while, and it was really filling.
My friends were all satisfied, and we naturally talked about coming back with our families next time. If you're looking for proper Korean food in Hommaesil or planning a hearty lunch, I recommend giving it a try. I'd love to taste the other menu items next time too. With carefully made food, good ingredients and a comfortable atmosphere, it stays in my memory as a place I'd gladly revisit.
