Hanam Misa Chinese restaurant with a puffed-rice send-off: O Hyeongje

When I think of restorative food, I usually think of samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), but after today I'll be thinking of seafood abalone nurungjitang too. I went to O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang Hanam Main Branch and had the seafood abalone nurungjitang and the fresh-tenderloin sweet and sour pork. The rich broth was loaded with abalone, seafood, and scorched rice, so one bowl left me completely full. The sweet and sour pork had soft, thick-cut meat too, and ordering both together turned out to be a great combo. Walking out full and happy, I thought I should bring my mom here next time.

The tables aren't cramped, and while the window seats aren't a private room, they feel slightly separated from the other tables, making for a more relaxed meal. It looked like a good spot for a family meal or bringing your parents along.

Side dishes arrive by robot, with refills at the self-serve bar

The side dishes are brought over by a robot. You're not supposed to take the whole tray down — just lift the plates off. I almost lifted the whole tray and caught myself just in time!

The side dishes overall are clean and neat. Nothing was overly seasoned or sharp, and the lineup refreshed the palate nicely. I especially liked the nutty namul (seasoned vegetables) and went back for a refill twice.

The dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) was cool and went down easy. The seasoning wasn't too strong and it tasted great.

It was also a nice touch that oranges were set out for dessert.

The two dishes ordered for the family meal

For a family gathering at this Hanam Misa restaurant, we ordered the two signature dishes.

Mini fresh-tenderloin tangsuyuk, 20,000 won

The mini fresh-tenderloin sweet and sour pork is ₩20,000, but despite the 'mini' label the portion is quite generous — more like a 'small' size, really.

Big chunks of broccoli and bell pepper on top made the dish look colorful and appetizing. Broccoli's expensive these days, and yet there were plenty of large pieces here. Broccoli is rich in fiber and said to have anti-cancer benefits, so enjoy it along with the sweet and sour pork.

Made with domestic chilled fresh tenderloin, the meat was soft and thick, which made it delicious. Each bite had a satisfying chew with a soft texture — pretty satisfying overall. It's a dish that works for grandparents and kids alike, so it's a good side order for a family visit.

Seafood abalone nurungjitang, 20,000 won

The seafood abalone nurungjitang is ₩20,000, and rich broth with crispy scorched rice is poured over a piping-hot stone pot right at the table. Watching it come together right in front of you makes for quite a dramatic entrance — if you want to catch it on video, start filming the moment the cart appears, because it's over fast. Each serving comes in its own stone pot, so everyone gets to enjoy it piping hot individually, which I liked.

Loaded with plenty of seafood plus abalone, scorched rice, and wild ginseng, the seafood abalone nurungjitang has a rich, thick broth. The seasoning isn't overdone, and each type of seafood has a different texture, which makes it fun to eat. The crispy scorched rice soaking in the broth and turning chewy was especially appealing. There's even a small piece of wild ginseng in there — just a baby root, but eating it still gave me a little boost of energy.

The herbal medicine aroma wasn't strong, just a faint hint, so it wasn't overwhelming. It's a flavor that's easy to handle even for those sensitive to herbal tastes, not just for older diners.

The orange served for dessert was fresh and sweet. They kept refilling it as soon as it emptied, so I got to enjoy it right up until the end of the meal.
