Nampo-dong charcoal grill: pork belly then ribs at Bueongi Maeul
In short
Bueongi Maeul is a charcoal grill Korean BBQ restaurant in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan, at 27 Bosu-daero 36beon-gil. The meal was ordered as a course: domestic fresh pork belly (saeng samgyeopsal) first, then seasoned pork ribs, with steamed egg and myeongran (salted pollack roe) among the basic side dishes and a mellow doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) to finish. For a calmer meal than Nampo-dong's busy pork rib alley, Bueongi Maeul is the easy choice.

What kind of grill house is Bueongi Maeul in Nampo-dong?
Bueongi Maeul (부엉이마을) is a charcoal grill Korean BBQ restaurant at 27 Boosudae-ro 36beon-gil, Jung-gu, Busan, in Nampo-dong. It's open daily from 16:30 to 23:00, with a paid public parking lot right next door.
I was scouting where to eat meat in Nampo-dong when I came across 'Bueongi Maeul' 🦉🤍 These days it's actually not easy to find a grill house with this kind of old-school charm...🥹 Bueongi Maeul has a few outdoor tables set up out front, and while there weren't a ton of them, walking past you just think, "grilling meat outside here would be so nice...!" haha 🤭 ˳🍖* 🍻⸝⸝

Main building or annex: which entrance do you use?
The main building and the annex are split on either side, but apparently both are the same 'Bueongi Maeul' 🦉 At first I was like, "wait, which one do I go in...?" but since they're the same restaurant either way, that's good to know if you're planning to visit 🫶🏻
There were a few outdoor tables set up out front — not a huge number, but they had a warm, nostalgic feel that's different from the sleek new grill houses you see everywhere these days haha. I run hot so I fled indoors...ha, but I'm planning to come back in the fall and try the outdoor tables 🤭
Side dishes at Bueongi Maeul: steamed egg and myeongran
Once you sit down at Bueongi Maeul, they set out a full spread of basic side dishes, and steamed egg (gyeranjjim) and myeongran (salted pollack roe) come included. No need to order them separately, which made for good eating while waiting for the meat.

As soon as I sat down they laid out the full spread of basic side dishes, and here's what won me over immediately... steamed egg came as a default side 🥹🥚🤍 At grill houses I usually end up ordering gyeranjjim separately because I want it, but here it just comes with the meal, so it felt like a bonus haha. Eating a spoonful of hot, fresh steamed egg while waiting for the meat to cook was perfect 🤭
And another thing... there was myeongran‼️ As someone who loves myeongran, the moment I saw it among the side dishes I was just happy...🥹💗 I don't think I've often seen myeongran as a default side at a grill house, and the salty roe actually goes surprisingly well with the meat! It's delicious on its own, but with a bit laid on top of nicely charred meat...♡ Steamed egg plus myeongran — the side dishes alone already won me over 🤭

Domestic fresh pork belly: what charcoal grilling changes
The first thing we ordered at Bueongi Maeul was domestic fresh pork belly (saeng samgyeopsal). It's grilled over actual charcoal rather than a gas plate, and that subtle charcoal aroma was the best part of the whole meal.

And the first thing we ordered — domestic fresh pork belly 🥩 One thing I personally loved about this meal was grilling the meat over actual charcoal 🔥 Samgyeopsal is already delicious cooked on a regular grill plate, but grilled over charcoal until nicely browned, it picks up a subtle smoky aroma that gives it a whole different kind of appeal 🥹 Wrapping the golden-brown pork belly with lettuce and various side dishes, and topping it off with my beloved myeongran, was completely my taste 🤍

Pork ribs after the pork belly: how the course tastes
At Bueongi Maeul we ordered in the sequence of pork belly first, then moving on to seasoned pork ribs. They lay the seasoned ribs over the charcoal and flip them carefully so they don't burn.
It felt like a shame to stop at just pork belly, so we ordered pork ribs too! They lay the seasoned ribs on the charcoal and diligently flip them so they don't burn 🔥 The seasoning was well absorbed, so it was delicious eaten plain, and just as good wrapped with vegetables...♡ Especially since we ate the pork belly first and then moved to the pork ribs, the seasoning completely shifted our palate again, and even though we were full, we kept eating haha. The pork belly → pork ribs course was such a good call 🫡🥩

Finishing with mellow doenjang jjigae
When you think of doenjang jjigae at a grill house, you usually expect a fairly strong MSG-heavy flavor, but this one had more of a mellow, homemade taste, like a grandmother made it herself at home...🥹🤎 It wasn't overly bold, and you could really taste the doenjang (soybean paste) itself, which made it perfect as a finish after the meat! One spoonful of the hot broth and my stomach just settled, somehow, haha. It wrapped up the meal with the doenjang jjigae on a really clean note 🍲🤍
Why Bueongi Maeul beats Nampo-dong's pork rib alley for a relaxed meal
Overall, this wasn't a flashy or trendy grill house, but one with a warm, familiar atmosphere where you can sit comfortably and grill meat over charcoal 🦉🤍 What I loved most was that, unlike the crowded, hectic pork rib alley in Nampo-dong, we could talk and eat at a much more relaxed pace haha.
And personally, the fact that steamed egg comes as a basic side plus there's myeongran was a huge plus...🤭💗 I couldn't stop thinking about the vibe of grilling meat at the outdoor tables out front, so once it cools down a bit, I'm planning to come back, sit outside, and properly enjoy meat with a drink 🤭🍻 Next time I'll come back for the real outdoor grilling experience 🦉🤍
