Jongno 3-ga bakery at 10:50am: a whole box of garlic bread, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a much-hyped bakery on Donhwamun-ro near Jongno 3-ga Station in Jongno, Seoul. Arriving at 10:50am, ten minutes before the 11am opening, there was already a queue, and the cramped shop let only two parties in at a time. Munhwa Bakery's signature garlic bread disappeared a whole box at a time back home, and the onion bagel stuffed with onion cream cheese was worth taking too.

Hi, this is Matjjang's Jeongseok. Today I went to Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), a must-stop on any bread pilgrimage near Jongno 3-ga Station. Munhwa Bakery is a genuinely famous bread spot that draws not just locals but foreign visitors touring Korea too. This being my nth visit, I know all too well that showing up late means missing out on the bread you want — so I did the 11am opening run.

Munhwa Bakery is also a registered Save the Children partner store. Somehow that makes it feel even busier, knowing it's a place doing good.

How long is the queue at Munhwa Bakery if you arrive at 10:50am?
Munhwa Bakery opens at 11am, but we got there earlier, at 10:50am. Even so, a lot of people were already waiting for their bread... Since so many people show up from the morning for the bread opening run, us bread-obsessed folks never feel lonely.

The interior is cramped, so you have to enter slowly, two parties at a time. Finally 11am hit and we went in!

All the freshly baked breads were lined up, showing off their fragrant smell. This is exactly why people do the opening run, I think!

What breads are on the shelves at Munhwa Bakery?
This is Munhwa Bakery's signature menu item, the garlic bread. Doesn't it look incredibly appetizing with all that glossy shine? If you come to Munhwa Bakery, this is a must-buy item. It's moist yet sweet-savory, thoroughly coated in garlic sauce — a bread you could eat endlessly.

The smell of coffee bread wafts through the whole store as soon as you walk in. The bread is huge, so it's amazing value. It's also soft and has a deep, sweet-bitter coffee flavor — a definite favorite for coffee lovers!

Beyond that, there's rice-chestnut bread, sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread, walnut bread, maple cream cheese bread and more — all generously sized and packed with fillings.

But the bread I chose was this onion bagel. The size alone is amazing — inside a giant black-sesame-topped bagel is a hefty amount of onion cream cheese.

Black sesame bread, milk cream bread, squid ink condensed-milk bread, and cheese bread are all breads that soft-bread lovers would enjoy.

Injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, peanut bread, and mugwort cream bread are menu items that older folks would especially like.

Why one box of Munhwa Bakery garlic bread disappears in a sitting
We got the onion bagel and garlic bread from Munhwa Bakery and headed home. The look of the garlic bread... so glossy and shiny, and you can feel the sweetness, moistness, and softness all at once — utterly heavenly.

The soft, fluffy garlic bread is heavenly with milk. Honestly I meant to eat only half and save the rest for tomorrow, but I couldn't stop myself and ended up finishing the whole box. Next time I'm definitely buying two boxes.

What does the onion cream cheese in the onion bagel taste like?
Munhwa Bakery's onion bagel fills a chewy bagel with a generous amount of onion cream cheese. Cream cheese can easily get too rich, but crunchy onion pieces and nuts scattered throughout give it both great texture and flavor at once.

The chewy bagel dough and the sweet-savory, nutty onion cream cheese are a fantastic combination. I love cream cheese so much that this onion bagel, stuffed to bursting with it, kept coming to mind afterward... I got the sense they don't skimp on ingredients at all — they're only focused on taste.
Is Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga worth the early queue?
Today I visited Munhwa Bakery, a bread-pilgrimage favorite near Jongno 3-ga Station, and I could immediately feel why it's so popular. They don't skimp on ingredients at all and pack everything in generously, and the bread tastes great — if you're out and about in Jongno 3-ga, I'd definitely recommend making the trip to Munhwa Bakery.
