Jongno bakery bread eaten at home with milk: coffee bread, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout bakery on Donhwamun-ro at the edge of Ikseon-dong in Jongno, Seoul. Stopping by before meeting a friend, the writer picked up Munhwa Bakery's two best sellers, coffee bread at 5,800 won and garlic bread at 6,800 won, and ate them at home with milk: the coffee bread has little cream so it never feels heavy, and the garlic bread is strongly fragrant yet sweet rather than spicy. One bite explains why Munhwa Bakery is a queueing stop on the Jongno bakery pilgrimage.

I had plans near Ikseon-dong in Jongno today. I got there earlier than the time I was supposed to meet my friend, so I was walking around looking at things when I spotted a bakery that looked familiar. I knew the name and that it was somewhere in Jongno, but I didn't know exactly where it was. This is Munhwa Bakery, the Ikseon-dong bread spot I'd been telling myself I had to visit since it's famous for its bread.
Apparently it's a stop on the Jongno bakery pilgrimage for people who love bread. I didn't want to add to my bags since I had plans, but I couldn't pass up the chance, so I picked up a couple of light items. Let's get into Munhwa Bakery, the bakery pilgrimage spot near Jongno 3-ga / Ikseon-dong.
Where is Munhwa Bakery and what are its hours?
Munhwa Bakery, the Ikseon-dong bread spot, sits near the edge of Ikseon-dong. The address is 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and if you're taking the subway, it's within 5 minutes of exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station. Seosullo-gil is nearby too, so there's plenty to see and eat around here — great to combine with a visit.

What Munhwa Bakery looks like outside and inside

Munhwa Bakery is a really tiny shop. There's a sign at the entrance that says 'Interior is small, please enter in groups of 2.' When I arrived, there were already people inside for about 3 minutes, so I figured I'd have to wait.

There's a bread-shaped standing sign outside, so you can spot it right away as you're walking up.

Standing in line, I noticed the coffee bread and garlic bread seemed to be the most popular. And once I actually got inside to buy, I wanted to try everything. Everything looked delicious and the shop was full of a savory, nutty smell.
Munhwa Bakery apparently only sells bread made that day, and whatever doesn't sell gets donated to people in need — children facing food insecurity, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities living at home, free meal centers, homeless shelters, and so on. Great taste and doing good too! Another reason to come back more often.
What I ordered at Munhwa Bakery: coffee bread and garlic bread
But! Let's not get greedy. Bread is best eaten fresh, right?

Here's what I chose at Munhwa Bakery, the bakery pilgrimage spot!

Coffee bread and garlic bread. Honestly, the moment you walk into the shop, the smell of garlic bread just hits you. It's the kind of smell and look you simply can't resist buying.
How to store the bread — best eaten same day, can be kept at room temperature same day, freeze if eating after day 1.
What does Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread taste like?
I bought the coffee bread because I noticed every customer I saw was buying it, haha. It also looked really soft, so I figured it would taste great with milk.

After meeting my friend, I got home and tried the bread right away. It really is just as soft as it looks. It's the kind of soft where you barely need to chew, haha. There's cream inside, but only a little — so instead of being heavy, it actually feels light. Take a bite of bread, then a sip of milk, and it just melts away!

What does Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread taste like?
The garlic bread is packed with garlic seasoning(?). I've been eating a lot of garlic bread lately, and my dad said Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is the best he's had. It's full of garlic aroma, sweet, and the bread itself was soft.
What stood out most was that the garlic flavor was strong but not spicy or harsh at all — it lingered in my mouth sweet and nutty. Tasting it, I immediately understood why people line up for this bakery pilgrimage spot. I'm going to go back for more of the other breads — there are so many I still want to try!
If you're visiting Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, give Munhwa Bakery a try. Recommended!
