Jongno bakery's cream-filled garlic and crisp walnut bread: Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-focused bakery in Jongno, Seoul, about 200 meters from Jongno 3-ga Station and close to the Ikseon-dong hanok street. The garlic bread was packed with cream inside that softened its salty garlic flavor, while the walnut bread had crisp walnuts on the outside and a soft crumb inside. Munhwa Bakery bakes and sells on the same day and donates what is left, which made the visit memorable beyond the bread.

I stopped by Munhwa Bakery while I was around Jongno 3-ga. I'd heard it was a pretty famous bakery near Ikseon-dong, so I was curious, and this time I finally got to visit. Lately I've been having a lot of fun hunting down bakeries, and Munhwa Bakery turned out to be a bit special, not just in taste. Let me start with the location :)

It's just a short walk from Jongno 3-ga Station. It's also close to the Ikseon-dong hanok street, so it's a good stop if you're on an Ikseon-dong date or exploring around Jongno.

What the storefront and inside of Munhwa Bakery are like

Munhwa Bakery's exterior had a different vibe from the big bakeries you see these days. It has a cozy, warm feel that fits right into the Jongno alleyways, so you can tell it's a bakery at a glance while walking by.

Inside, the space itself isn't very big, and it's set up for taking bread to go. But for the size of the shop, the variety of bread was bigger than expected, so it was fun to browse around.

Which breads does Munhwa Bakery sell?

Munhwa Bakery had quite a variety ready, including garlic bread, coffee bread, and onion bagel, along with sweet potato bread, injeolmi (rice cake) bread, black sesame bread, mugwort rice cake bread, and various loaves.

These days a lot of bakeries go for flashy visuals and higher prices, but Munhwa Bakery had a lot of familiar breads where you could imagine the taste just from the name, which actually made choosing more fun.

Baked and sold the same day, with leftovers donated

One thing that really stood out about Munhwa Bakery was their principle of selling bread baked that same day, and not just throwing away what's left over. Unsold bread is apparently donated to places that need it, like children facing food insecurity, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities, and free meal centers.

Since it's food, freshness matters, so I liked that they sell bread made that same day, and the way they share leftover bread instead of throwing it away also stuck with me. It felt like I was eating good bread and naturally supporting a good cause at the same time, and I hoped a place like this would keep doing well for a long time.

Garlic bread and walnut bread from Munhwa Bakery, packed to go

Garlic bread packed with cream inside

The first thing I ate was the garlic bread! From the outside I expected a typical garlic bread, but there was so much soft cream packed inside that it was way more satisfying than I thought.

The garlic flavor definitely comes through, but with the cream mixed in, it wasn't too strong and felt smoothed out instead. The cream inside was especially generous, so every bite was moist and soft, and the salty garlic flavor paired with the rich creaminess kept me reaching for more.

Personally, between the two, the garlic bread was more my style. If you like breads loaded with cream, I think you'll be satisfied.

Walnut bread with crisp walnuts on top

I also bought the walnut bread. The highlight of the walnut bread was the walnuts stuck on the outside. You get a crisp bite first, but the inside isn't too hard and chews softly, so the texture was quite good.

Overall it had a light sweetness, not overly sweet, and you could taste the walnut's distinct rich, nutty flavor alongside it.

This one seems like it would pair especially well with coffee! If the garlic bread is the moist, cream-loaded style, the walnut bread is the nutty, sweet one you can enjoy for its texture — the two felt clearly different from each other.

Verdict after trying both breads at Munhwa Bakery

I tried two items this time and was happy with both, each with its own charm. The garlic bread stuck with me especially for how generously the cream was packed inside, and the walnut bread had a nice texture with crisp walnuts on the outside and a soft bite underneath.

Overall, there were a lot of familiar, easy-to-eat breads rather than anything too flashy or intense, so they'd be great to take home too. Above all, selling same-day baked bread and donating leftovers instead of throwing them away left a good impression that's uniquely Munhwa Bakery's own.

If you're looking for a bakery around Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, or if you enjoy a Seoul bakery pilgrimage, I think it's worth stopping by :)
