Looking for Korean rice bread in Gunsan

While looking for a good bakery in Gunsan, I stopped by Hongyun Bakery (홍윤베이커리) for the first time in a while. Gunsan has lots of famous bakeries, but Hongyun Bakery is consistently loved by locals too, so it is well worth a stop if you love bread.

What stood out about Hongyun Bakery in particular was that it offers bread made with Korean rice. I love wheat-flour bread too, but rice bread has a slightly different texture and feels easy to eat, so I picked out a few kinds.

Because they bake the bread themselves, the smell was so, so good. I visited around 1 p.m., and the shelves were packed without any breads sold out.

It was more filling than eating just one piece of bread, so I thought it would make a nice light meal or brunch option. Maybe because it was made with Korean rice, it had a charm that felt different from an ordinary pastry.

Next was sweet red bean bread, a true bakery classic. It is the kind of thing I always end up picking up whenever I go to a bakery. Hongyun Bakery's sweet red bean bread had sweet red bean paste inside soft bread, making it great with coffee or milk. Fancy breads are lovely too, but classic breads that have been loved for a long time seem to have such a comforting flavor every time I eat them. It would be nice to pack as a snack for kids, and adults can enjoy it easily too.

Lastly, the blueberry cream cheese bread that I really enjoyed! The bright flavor of blueberries went beautifully with the soft, nutty cream cheese. It was sweet, but the distinctive freshness of the blueberries kept it from feeling overly rich, so I kept reaching for it. Personally, it was the one I would especially recommend to anyone who loves the blueberry-and-cream-cheese combination out of the three.

From familiar breads to something different

What I felt while choosing breads at Hongyun Bakery this time was that there was a wide variety to enjoy, from familiar choices to something a little different. In particular, being able to try breads made with Korean rice gave it a different feel from an ordinary neighborhood bakery.
