Hwaseong tonkatsu lunch with wasabi at Kkot Gatsu

In short

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a Japanese-style cutlet restaurant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, serving 10-day-aged pork cutlets. We shared the Kkot Gatsu Set, Cheese Gatsu Set, and spicy Hwa Udon. Verdict: the thick cutlet with a dab of wasabi was the standout lunch bite.

I went to visit my friend at their house, and we came out to have lunch together. I feel this every time I visit, but this neighborhood seems to have so many great restaurants. The atmosphere is clean and relaxed, and even with a quick look around, one nice-looking restaurant after another caught my eye. While deciding on lunch with my friend, we ended up at Kkot Gatsu.

I already love tonkatsu (Japanese-style pork cutlet), so I went in feeling excited. Looking at the menu, though, I noticed something a little different from the usual tonkatsu story. It said, “10 days of waiting, Kkot Gatsu.”

Sign explaining Kkot Gatsu's 10-day aging

Kkot Gatsu explains that it ages its pork for 10 days to make the juices and umami richer. It also says it uses premium Korean pork, house-made pickles, lemon salt, and clean, fresh oil. Rather than simply frying a cutlet and calling it done, the description made it seem as though care goes into everything from ingredients to cooking for a good meal, so I was already looking forward to the food before it arrived.

We ordered the Kkot Gatsu Set and the Cheese Gatsu Set. It was lunch for two, but we wanted to try a bit of everything—and it turned into a wonderfully generous spread.

Kkot Gatsu, perfected through 10 days of waiting

The first thing I want to talk about at Kkot Gatsu is, of course, the Kkot Gatsu itself.

A taste that blooms in your mouth.

The name Kkot Gatsu is fun in itself, but after reading that description and tasting it, I could understand a little why they gave it that name.

A full table of Kkot Gatsu and Cheese Gatsu sets

Once the dishes came out one by one and filled the table, it was more generous than I had expected.

With the Kkot Gatsu Set, Cheese Gatsu Set, and spicy Hwa Udon, it offered a much wider range of flavors than having cutlet alone. The cutlets looked thick, with nicely golden breading. They were crisp outside with moist meat inside, and the cross-section looked appetizing from the moment I saw it. Rice and salad came with them too, making it a satisfying lunch. Sitting across from my friend and sharing this and that made it a little more fun than an ordinary lunch.

Thick Kkot Gatsu that was not dry

What I liked most while eating Kkot Gatsu was the texture of the meat.

Crisp breading matters with tonkatsu, but ultimately what is inside really matters, right? Kkot Gatsu had real thickness without feeling overly dry or tough. First came the crunch of the breading, then as I chewed, the meat’s tender texture and flavor followed. The thick cross-section when I cut it in half was especially appetizing. Maybe because I had read about the 10-day aging first, I naturally paid more attention to the flavor of the pork too.

Kkot Gatsu and wasabi: an unexpectedly good match

The pairing I remember most from that day was Kkot Gatsu with wasabi.

At first, putting wasabi with tonkatsu felt a little unfamiliar. But when I put a small dab on a piece of Kkot Gatsu, it worked far better than I expected. The sharp, nose-tingling heat of the wasabi joined the savory, clean flavor of the pork and made my mouth feel refreshed. It did not cover up the cutlet’s flavor, but seemed to rein in any richness, and I really enjoyed it. It even had that clean finish you get when you have wasabi with sashimi.

This is a pairing I definitely wanted to write down among everything we ate that day. If you usually dip tonkatsu only in sauce, I think it would be nice to try Kkot Gatsu with just a little wasabi. I thought it was unexpected at first too, but once I tried it, I kept reaching for more.

Cheese Gatsu for properly enjoying cheese

Next up was the Cheese Gatsu.

There was plenty of cheese inside the cutlet, and when I lifted it with chopsticks while it was hot, the cheese stretched out long. It was a look I could not help photographing. With tender meat and savory cheese inside the crisp breading, every bite had a definite richness.

Cheese Gatsu had a charm quite different from Kkot Gatsu. While Kkot Gatsu was wonderful for the flavor of the meat itself and its clean pairing with wasabi, Cheese Gatsu was a menu item for truly enjoying the rich, soft flavors of meat and cheese. That is why I think ordering both was actually a good choice. Their flavor directions were different, so alternating between them was more fun.

Spicy Hwa Udon that paired well with cutlet

The Hwa Udon that came with the cutlets was genuinely spicy. When you are eating tonkatsu, the richness of the fried coating can make your mouth feel a little heavy, so the spicy broth made for a great pairing.

The broth had noodles and various ingredients, and the noodles had a pleasantly chewy texture. A bite of crisp cutlet followed by a sip of spicy broth made my mouth feel reset. Sharing a variety of dishes with my friend was especially better than eating cutlet continuously. The mild savory flavor of Kkot Gatsu + the deep richness of Cheese Gatsu + the heat of Hwa Udon. Each tasted different, so lunch never became boring.

A self-serve side-dish corner and a comfortable atmosphere

One convenient part of the meal was the self-serve side-dish corner. It was easy to take whatever side dishes we needed whenever we wanted more. We could bring only as much as we wanted while having lunch, which felt easygoing. Little conveniences like this are quietly important when you are eating, right?

The overall atmosphere was clean too. The wood-toned interior and lighting came together for a calm, comfortable feel, and it was a nice setting to talk over lunch with a friend.

For a casual meal like today, when you visit a friend’s house and naturally meet up for food, I think this comfortable atmosphere would be appealing too. The space was neatly arranged, which was nice for taking food photos as well.

After we finished eating, I looked around the restaurant and spotted an eye-catching area on one wall. It was a space filled with photos and signatures from people who had visited Kkot Gatsu. Seeing the signatures left alongside the photos made it feel like a place that has been loved for quite a long time. It was fun looking at traces of well-known visitors too, and going through the signatures one by one with my friend, saying, “Oh, they came here too?” was quietly entertaining.

Checking the awards and country-of-origin labels

On another wall, there were awards from the KCIA Korea Consumer Industry Assessment. Seeing awards spanning 2022, 2023, and 2026 made me look forward to the food a little more even before it arrived. The recognition in the tonkatsu category especially stood out. It could have been a display I simply walked past, but seeing the plaques again after eating made me think, “Ah, these records are not there for no reason.” Of course, awards alone cannot determine taste, but from someone who had actually eaten there, I think they can be a useful factor to consider when choosing a restaurant.

At restaurants, another thing I quietly pay attention to almost as much as flavor is the country-of-origin labeling. Kkot Gatsu had a separate origin label as well.

Kkot Gatsu country-of-origin information

Having the origins of the ingredients displayed so you can check them at a glance made me feel a little more at ease while eating.

There was also a receipt-review notice on one side of the table. It explained regular and photo reviews, along with review benefits such as cheese balls or beer. These days, many people leave receipt reviews after visiting good restaurants, and having the information right near the table made participation look easy. When even these small notices are well organized, I tend to feel that the restaurant puts a lot of thought into its operation too.

A more enjoyable Dongtan lunch with a friend

We did not plan a special restaurant tour that day. We simply went to visit my friend and, wondering, “What should we have for lunch?” found this place together, but it was more delicious than expected and stayed in my memory. As I feel every time I come here, this neighborhood really seems to have lots of good restaurants. It has a nice atmosphere and many places to eat, so it feels like an area with plenty of choices for meeting friends or dining out with family.

This time at Kkot Gatsu, we tried the Kkot Gatsu Set, Cheese Gatsu Set, and spicy Hwa Udon in a nice variety. Of those, the Kkot Gatsu-and-wasabi pairing was definitely the most memorable. Perhaps because I read that the pork had been aged for 10 days, I paid closer attention to its flavor, and above all, I loved how the savory richness of the meat came through cleanly with wasabi. Cheese Gatsu was fun because the cheese stretched out long when it was hot, and spicy Hwa Udon was a good dish to eat alongside cutlet. After having a delicious lunch with my friend, I left feeling happy for no particular reason. If I visit my friend again next time, I am already curious where we will have lunch then. 😊

If you want to enjoy thick tonkatsu and Cheese Gatsu together in Dongtan, Kkot Gatsu could be a good choice—and I definitely think you should experience Kkot Gatsu with a little wasabi at least once.
