Chungmuro Station lunch: jang kalguksu & lemon soba, Nagwon-ui Soba
In short
Nagwon-ui Soba (낙원의소바) is a soba, bossam and kalguksu restaurant in Jung-gu, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Chungmuro Station Exit 1, and it makes its soba from buckwheat noodles pulled fresh every morning. On an early weekday evening at Nagwon-ui Soba, the order was a small bossam (36,000 won), a 17,000 won hansang set switched to lemon soba, and jang kalguksu (11,000 won); the dining room was packed even at dinner, yet the food came out quickly. Verdict: a satisfying meal, with the zesty lemon soba refreshing the palate between the meat dishes until nothing was left.

If you're hunting for a cool soba place near Chungmuro Station on a hot day like these, this one is worth a visit. I had a satisfying meal of clean-tasting soba. Come out of Chungmuro Station Exit 1 and go straight, and it's 3 minutes away: Nagwon-ui Soba (낙원의소바)! Okay, let me tell you about my visit~

What kind of place is Nagwon-ui Soba?
Nagwon-ui Soba started as a small shop near Seoul National University Station in 2019, and has since moved to Chungmuro, where it has become a go-to spot for cold buckwheat noodles. What impressed me most is that the soba is made with buckwheat noodles kneaded and pulled by hand every morning. That sounded full of care, so I went in curious how it would taste, haha.

Can CatchTable cut the wait at Nagwon-ui Soba?
If you queue remotely with the CatchTable app, you don't have to wait on site. I hear lunchtime is insanely crowded, so it's a good idea to use CatchTable ahead of time.

Weekday evening atmosphere and seating
Since it's a popular lunch spot near Chungmuro Station, I hear office workers love it. I visited early on a weekday evening, and even then it was pretty full. Seating ranges from single seats up to tables for 8, and there were even baby high chairs :)

The tables also have a menu in English, which is considerate toward foreign visitors.

Nagwon-ui Soba menu and the three dishes I ordered
The menu covers soba, bossam (boiled pork wraps), kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and pork cutlet. It began with soba, but kalguksu, bossam and more were newly added. I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I ordered several dishes.
- Bossam (small) ₩36,000
- Hansang set (pork cutlet + soba) ₩17,000
- Jang kalguksu (spicy knife-cut noodle soup) ₩11,000
Three dishes ordered, haha. Moist, mild bossam, crispy pork cutlet, tangy, cool soba and spicy, hearty jang kalguksu!! An absolutely delicious combo, so I was really looking forward to it.

I think this was the soy-pickled radish that came as a side dish. It was a flavor I'd never had, so it felt fresh. Sweet and salty and tasty, my chopsticks kept going back to it.

How does the jang kalguksu taste?
The jang kalguksu (₩11,000) had a properly spicy, savory broth. It came out first, so I started with the broth, and the soup had soaked into the noodles, which made them perfect to eat.

Then the rest of the dishes came out one after another. A full spread, and the look of it is something else, right? 🤤 I didn't wait long, as it all came out quickly.

How was the small bossam?
The bossam (small, ₩36,000) has a crazy ratio of fat to lean meat..❤️ I tried the bossam first, and it was satisfying from the very first bite.

The bossam comes with napa cabbage kimchi, dried radish strips and seasoned radish, and eating them with the meat was a perfect match.

I made a wrap too: meat on a cabbage leaf, topped with dried radish strips. One bite and the meat melted in my mouth. Why doesn't bossam made at home ever taste like this, haha.

Can you swap the hansang set for lemon soba?
The hansang set (₩17,000) is soba plus a half portion of pork cutlet, and the noodles or the cutlet can be changed. I switched to lemon soba!

The crispy fried cutlet was quite thick. The meat wasn't dry but tender, and dipping it in the cutlet sauce that came with it made it even better.

Does lemon soba go well with meat dishes?
Nagwon-ui Soba's lemon soba comes with a whole lemon in it! After eating meat dishes like bossam and pork cutlet, a bite of lemon soba left my mouth feeling totally reset. The fresh lemon scent in the soba broth cut the richness, and eaten together with the cutlet, the two went really well. It was so good that I finished every last bit 😄
Hearty bossam, spicy kalguksu, crispy cutlet and refreshing lemon soba made this a very satisfying meal! If you're looking for lunch in Chungmuro or a good spot to eat solo, I recommend Nagwon-ui Soba~
