Last weekend, my husband and I drove out to Mulwang Reservoir and had dinner at Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch (불향집 물왕호수본점), a Korean BBQ spot where you can really enjoy charcoal-grilled bulgogi. They grill the meat directly over charcoal, so the pork is full of smoky flavor. It is one of our favorite places that my husband and I visit from time to time, so I had to introduce it!

Charcoal bulgogi menu and prices

Charcoal bulgogi menu at Bulhyangjip

Bulhyangjip's main dishes are charcoal bulgogi, charcoal gochujang bulgogi, and pre-grilled pork belly. There are also sides such as bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles), doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), steamed egg, and naengmyeon (cold noodles), which were nice alongside the meat. At ₩16,000 per serving, the prices felt like good value too! :) Rice, doenjang jjigae, and steamed egg are ordered separately.

Sweet-savory charcoal pajeon bulgogi

Once we ordered, the table was filled with basic side dishes. From salad to seasoned bean sprouts, they were all good accompaniments for the charcoal bulgogi.

It was nice that we could easily help ourselves to more side dishes at the self-service bar.

The first dish to arrive was the smoky charcoal pajeon bulgogi. It came already cooked from the kitchen, so all we had to do was warm it over the gentle heat at the table and enjoy it, which was convenient.

For reference, the signature dishes require a minimum first order of two servings, while additional orders can be made one serving at a time.

Charcoal pajeon bulgogi on an iron griddle

The charcoal pajeon bulgogi came heaped generously on a large iron griddle and made my mouth water just looking at it. At first glance, it looked like pajeon (a savory scallion pancake), but there was a generous layer of thinly sliced pork underneath, giving it a rather unique look.

First, I tried a bite of the nicely cooked bulgogi. The smoky meat and sweet-savory seasoning together really woke up my appetite.

It was also delicious to dip the bulgogi in the house sauce with finely chopped garlic and Cheongyang chili peppers. Wrapping it in perilla leaves with this and that side dish was a perfect match too.

We also ordered a steamed egg to enjoy as a side, and it was so generous that I could hardly guess how many eggs had gone into it! :)

Charcoal gochujang bulgogi that was easy even for a spice wimp

It would have been a shame to try only the charcoal bulgogi, so we ordered one serving of gochujang bulgogi too.

Partially grilled charcoal gochujang bulgogi

The gochujang bulgogi was also partially grilled before it arrived, so it was easy to finish with just a little cooking at the table.

Even though we ordered only one serving, there was quite a lot of gochujang bulgogi. True to a restaurant known for 49 years of charcoal pre-grilling tradition, the meat had a lovely, gentle smoky aroma.

Gochujang bulgogi with a gentle charcoal aroma

Unlike the charcoal pajeon bulgogi, the gochujang bulgogi had a richer seasoning aroma. As someone who cannot handle much spice, I loved that the seasoning was not overpowering and I could enjoy it comfortably.

Comparison of two kinds of charcoal bulgogi

Both the pajeon bulgogi and gochujang bulgogi had their own charm, so choose according to your taste. I would recommend the relatively easy-to-eat charcoal pajeon bulgogi when visiting with children, while adults who enjoy spicy seasoning may prefer the gochujang bulgogi!

If you are looking for a dog-friendly Korean BBQ restaurant near Mulwang Reservoir, I would recommend Bulhyangjip in Mokgam, Siheung. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of parking, and the owner and staff were all so kind that we had a very pleasant meal.
