Stroller-friendly Sokcho bakery café: baby-soft potato bread, Bultan

In short

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread bakery café on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. The writer stopped by with their parents and baby, bought 4 potato breads and 12 jjondeugi (chewy snack sticks), and liked the roomy shop, the Mustoy photo spot and the not-too-sweet potato bread. Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is a good place to pick up gift snacks on a Sokcho family trip with a baby and grandparents.

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store (속초불탄감자빵 본점) is a potato bread bakery café you should visit at least once on a trip to Sokcho. It was one of the very first places we went after arriving, and since I already like potato desserts, it was even better than I expected. It's great for gifts too!

I think part of why it's one of the most talked-about bakery cafés in Sokcho is that the food is good for you, too. The unusual look of the exterior caught my eye, and you can spot this potato bread specialist's personality from far away. Lots of people were taking photos right out front, and my mom and dad, who pay attention to their health these days, loved it too!

Inside the shop: is it okay to bring a stroller?

The café inside is really big, so it looked easy to bring a baby stroller in. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was the potato bread that looks just like real potatoes.

They're made so carefully that it's hard to tell whether it's a potato or bread, so first-timers will probably be a little surprised. The surface looks like a dirt-covered potato, and inside it's moist and soft, so it's fun to look at and fun to eat.

4 potato breads and 12 jjondeugi: how was the gift packaging?

This time I bought 4 potato breads and 12 jjondeugi (chewy snack sticks). We needed something to eat on the trip, and I also planned to share some back home.

The potato bread felt heavier than I expected, and the packaging was neat, so carrying it around wasn't a hassle. Each one is easy to take out and eat on its own, so I thought it would work well as a gift. Looking around, quite a few people were buying several boxes.

The Mustoy photo spot, great for kids

I was happy to run into Mustoy inside the shop too. There's a space where you can take photos with cute character props, so it's not just a place to grab bread and leave. You can take a little break from the trip and enjoy looking around.

It's an extra kids will probably like even more. I saw families taking photos with the characters. And apparently you just microwave the potato bread for 20 seconds and you're done.

What do the jjondeugi taste like?

The jjondeugi were chewy with a nutty flavor. Honestly, I went in thinking only about the potato bread, but I heard the jjondeugi are pretty famous too, so I grabbed a bunch, you know?

They're addictive, the kind you keep reaching for... Maybe that's why, even though I brought home a whole 12, it felt like they'd disappear fast. They're good as a snack and fine to enjoy with kids.

Moist, soft inside of the potato bread
Soft bean-paste filling of the potato bread that the baby ate

Is the potato bread very sweet? Is it soft enough for a baby?

The good thing about the potato bread is that it isn't too sweet. Lots of desserts these days are very sweet, but Bultan brings out the natural flavor of the potato, so it's easy to enjoy.

The texture is moist and soft, and even my baby ate the sweet bean-paste filling with just gums! It would go well with coffee or other drinks, and I think it would pair nicely with milk too.

Parking and location: a stop on the way to Seoraksan

Another plus: the main store has loads of parking space. It's on the way to Seoraksan and in an area where the soft tofu restaurants cluster, so if you're passing by, definitely stop in!!!

Sokcho has so many famous foods, but if you're looking for a good bakery café in Sokcho, I'd recommend the Bultan Gamja Bread main store. As a healthy snack it was great for gifts to family and friends, and we had a fun time looking at the cute Mustoy characters too. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a special dessert or souvenir that won't be boring.
