Mazesoba and gyukatsu at a Samsan-dong, Ulsan katsu restaurant: Izawa

In short

Izawa Ulsan The Terrace Garden branch is a Japanese-style gyukatsu and tonkatsu restaurant on Samsan-ro in Nam-gu, Ulsan. A couple ordered three dishes — gyukatsu at 17,000 won, rosu-katsu at 12,000 won and mazesoba at 10,000 won — grilling the gyukatsu themselves on a mini charcoal burner and eating the rosu-katsu straight away. The gyukatsu, crisp outside and tender inside with the restaurant's special fruit sauce, was the favorite of the three.

The moment we stepped in, Izawa had such strong Japanese vibes!

A separate waiting area at the restaurant

There was even a separate waiting area haha. It was stylishly decorated with a Japanese feel 💕

Spacious, clean interior of Izawa
Interior view with many tables

The interior was spacious and clean, with quite a lot of tables too.

Solo seating good for dining alone

There were seats good for solo dining, so coming alone for delicious gyukatsu wouldn't feel awkward at all haha.

6-person table for group dining

There were also 6-person tables, so it seemed fine for group visits or family meals too 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦💕

Such a thoughtful touch that they even had baby chairs! Restaurants without baby chairs are harder to find these days lol, but still, having one is reassuring, you know? Good good 👍

What the seating at Izawa is like

Seating decorated with figurines and posters

We picked this spot because the interior was pretty haha. Sitting next to it, we had fun looking at the figurines and posters too ><

After a short wait, the food came out pretty quickly! First of all, the visuals passed the test 🙆🏻‍♀️ Just looking at it made us want to dig in right away lol.

Gyukatsu, 17,000 won: grilling beef cutlet on the mini burner

The key point of Izawa's gyukatsu (beef cutlet) is that you place it on a mini charcoal grill and cook it to your own preferred doneness! 🔥 You can just lightly grill it bit by bit as much as you like~

This one right here is seriously so good ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Insane, just insane lol.

A piece of gyukatsu grilled on the mini charcoal grill

I grilled it lightly and took a bite, and the meat was so tender…🥹 Really crispy outside and soft inside! I put a bit of wasabi on it and dipped it in Izawa's special fruit sauce, and wow…… what is this combination? 🤦🏻‍♀️ It was so delicious I kept gasping while eating lol. If you like gyukatsu, this is a flavor you'll be satisfied with!

Out of everything I ate that day, the gyukatsu was by far the best 👏🏻👏🏻

Rosu-katsu, 12,000 won: crisp and light pork loin cutlet

Next up, rosu-katsu (pork loin cutlet)! It had a different charm from the gyukatsu haha.

Rosu-katsu with a pale, well-cooked interior

Light in flavor with a crispy exterior~✨ The thick cutlet's inside was cooked to a nice pale color too! Since there's no grilling step and you can eat it right away, it seemed like a good pick to visit with kids who love tonkatsu too 👧🏻👦🏻💕

Dip it in the special rosu-katsu sauce and yum!

A piece of rosu-katsu topped with wasabi

And for adult tastes, wasabi is a must, right? lol 🌱 My husband and I shared the gyukatsu and rosu-katsu and had fun comparing the two different styles of flavor haha.

Mazesoba, 10,000 won: the side dish worth adding

Mazesoba ordered as a side dish

And the mazesoba (brothless mixed noodles) we ordered as a side!!! Made with a special secret sauce, apparently — the noodles were chewy and salty with tons of savory flavor 🤤

Mixed mazesoba noodles
Pork belly and noodles picked up together from the mazesoba

Picking up pork belly with the noodles and slurping it down together… you know how it is lol. You just can't resist the meat-and-noodle combo ❤️ Eating it alongside the gyukatsu refreshed our palate in between bites, and it was great as a side dish!

Which of Izawa's three dishes was the favorite?

Overall, we enjoyed everything we ordered! But among them, my pick is clearly…

🥇 Gy-u-ka-tsu!!!!!

It was so delicious that next time I'll order a double portion of gyukatsu lol. I want to eat so much of it 🥹💕 There's fun in grilling it to your own preferred doneness, and with meat that melts in your mouth paired with the sauce and wasabi, I get why people who love gyukatsu come here haha.
