Dongtan shabu kalguksu with a bottle of Dongtan makgeolli: Deungchon
In short
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is a shabu kalguksu (hot pot noodle) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Gran Passage's Green Zone, near Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A couple stopped in for a weekday lunch after the husband's health checkup and ordered the clear mushroom kalguksu at 10,000 won with added minari, beef and sujebi (hand-torn dough), plus a bottle of Dongtan makgeolli. The clear broth turned deeper as the mushrooms and vegetables cooked, and Deungchon's meal ended with kalguksu, sujebi and a porridge finish.

My husband had a health checkup recently, so we decided to have lunch together after it was done, while our baby was at daycare. As the weather turned cooler, we suddenly craved warm broth, so we went to Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch.

Weekday lunch at Deungchon: atmosphere and how long the wait is

We visited on a weekday for lunch, and there were really a lot of customers.
When we arrived, exactly one table was open, so we could sit without waiting — if we'd been even slightly later, we might have had to wait. The interior was pretty clean, and the tables were spaced out generously.

With shabu-shabu style dishes that keep simmering on the table, restaurants can sometimes feel hot or humid, but this place felt fairly comfortable, so it was easy to eat at ease.
Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu menu and tablet ordering

At Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu, you can choose your broth by preference — the main options were spicy mushroom kalguksu, clear mushroom kalguksu, and perilla mushroom kalguksu.

You order right at the table — each table has a tablet where you add your chosen items and place your order.

You can also choose your vegetable topping from three options — minari (water dropwort), bean sprouts, or minari plus bean sprouts — so you can adjust it to your taste.

How does Dongtan makgeolli taste?

I noticed Dongtan makgeolli (rice wine) on the menu and was curious, so I ordered one.

It was a sweet, easygoing makgeolli. (Contains aspartame)
Clear mushroom kalguksu with minari, beef and sujebi added

That day we ordered the clear mushroom kalguksu. For vegetables we only added minari, and we also ordered beef and sujebi.

At first I wondered if the clear broth might be a bit bland, but as the vegetables and mushrooms simmered together, the flavor of the broth kept getting richer.

Rather than being intense, it was closer to a clean, refreshing broth.

The flavor from the mushrooms and vegetables blended naturally into the broth, so it was easy to keep eating without feeling heavy.
The broth and the meat carried a fragrant hint of minari, which added a subtle depth to the flavor.

The chewy kalguksu noodles went really well with the broth, and adding sujebi on top made the meal quite filling.

After finishing the kalguksu and sujebi, we wrapped up the meal with porridge too.

Final thoughts on lunch at Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu
I was usually more used to the spicy Deungchon kalguksu, but the clear mushroom kalguksu turned out better than expected. With a clean, refreshing broth plus kalguksu and sujebi, it made for a satisfying lunch.

If you're looking for shabu-shabu or a warm noodle dish near Dongtan Lake Park, this place is worth a visit.
