Wonju café with bean choice and daily-baked financiers: Coffee Grip

In short

Coffee Grip is a café in Wonju Innovation City, Gangwon, right in front of the National Health Insurance Service headquarters, with a brighter interior after a change of owner. Coffee Grip lets you choose between nutty and acidic beans, and we paired our coffee with financiers baked in-house daily, a mini Basque cheesecake and an egg tart. With a large parking lot and an 8am opening, Coffee Grip is a handy neighborhood café for grabbing coffee on the way to work.

There was a café near my house that I always eyed whenever I walked by, and recently the owner changed and the interior got a complete makeover!

It looked so much brighter and more spacious at a glance, and the inside looked so light-filled that I finally went to check it out, curious.

Where is Coffee Grip in Wonju, and when is it open?

Coffee Grip is right in front of the National Health Insurance Service headquarters, so it's easy to find! The parking lot is also large, so you can drive there without worrying about parking!!

It's open every day from 8am to 9pm, so it's great to grab a coffee for a transfusion on the way to work haha.

What is the interior of Coffee Grip like?

So that's what "Coffee Grip" meant!! Walking inside, I immediately felt a cozy yet clean atmosphere.

There were quite a lot of tables too, so it seemed like a comfortable place to sit and chat haha.

I was especially surprised to see one side packed with so many books!! The owner must read a lot, because they were laid out for customers to read comfortably too.

As someone who loves quietly reading a book while drinking coffee at a café, I really loved this touch. And it was also nice that they accept Wonju Sarang, Gangwon, and Onnuri gift certificates.

Coffee Grip menu and dessert case

Coffee Grip's coffee and drink menu board

The coffee and drinks were really varied, and there were way more types of dessert than I expected, so standing in front of the showcase I genuinely agonized over what to order!!

There was egg tart, financier, tiramisu, and Basque cheesecake all lined up. Apparently there are usually more egg tart varieties, but on the day I went only the plain egg tart was out, which was a bit of a shame — but it looked so delicious that I picked it up without hesitation anyway!!

Choosing your coffee beans: nutty or acidic

The coffee here was great because you can choose your own beans. You could pick between a nutty flavor or an acidic flavor, and I'm always team nutty beans, so I went with that haha.

How did the coffee and desserts taste?

After much deliberation, I ordered a pretty full spread — iced Americano, iced decaf cold brew, egg tart, chunk chocolate financier, apple cinnamon financier, and mini Basque cheesecake — one of each kind lol.

When I tasted it, the flavor was deep and richly nutty, which paired perfectly with the desserts.

The decaf cold brew my friend had was also clean and easy to drink without any burden! And apparently they bake the desserts themselves every day, which explains why they tasted so distinctly good.

Mini Basque cheesecake at Coffee Grip

The Basque cheesecake in particular came in a perfect single-serving size, so both the size and the price felt just right. The dense yet soft cheese flavor with the iced Americano was truly a dream combo!!

Chunky chocolate and apple cinnamon financiers

The financiers, baked fresh every day, were crispy on the outside and moist inside, and the sweetness unique to the apple cinnamon and chunk chocolate really brought out the coffee's flavor even more.

The plain egg tart was a can't-fail flavor too.

Final verdict on Coffee Grip

I feel like I'll really end up coming here often now that a place this bright and full of great desserts has opened near my house. From the owner's thoughtful book selection to the coffee suited to my taste and the handmade desserts, nothing was lacking here. Next time, I definitely need to come back and try the other egg tart flavors!
