Finally made it to 'Hyeonseonine,' the Yongridan-gil restaurant already famous as a Choiza-approved spot :)

I'd wanted to come for ages, and finally got the chance since I was near Yongsan — went to the famous Yongsan tteokbokki spot 'Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch'!!! Even at 8:30pm on a Saturday night, it was packed, no doubt because of its fame as a Yongridan-gil tteokbokki (spicy rice cake stew) restaurant!

It's a 3-minute walk from Sinyongsan Station Exit 6, and the chimney sign is so eye-catching you can spot it from a distance :)

Ordering at the kiosk and the mood inside Hyeonseonine
Ordering at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is done via kiosk, with the menu split into set menus, instant menus, and à la carte items! I actually first learned about this Yongsan tteokbokki spot through Choiza's YouTube channel, where the spicy tteokbokki was the star!?!

Even with all the crowds, the high ceilings and spacious layout made it feel really comfortable! I went off peak hours and people kept streaming in the whole time…! Weekend lunch and dinner peak times must require a wait ✨ (The staff were so kind, it really stuck with me 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻)

Small plates, aprons, ladles, pickled radish, fried flakes, and various seasonings were all available self-serve! I was so happy to see the nostalgic fried flakes there :)
What 25,500 won gets you: instant set for two plus fried rice

Ordered the instant tteokbokki style for the first time in a while! Instant set for two (₩11,000 per person) + fried rice ₩3,500 = ₩25,500

The fried mandu (dumplings) come out separately, note that 💫 They also give you fish cake broth alongside!

There's a tip sheet for cooking the instant tteokbokki right! Definitely follow it! Still, the staff kept checking on us and told us to lower the heat when it got too high, so we got it simmered down just perfectly haha

How did the mild instant tteokbokki taste?
I ordered mild spice level, and it looked exactly like the tteokbokki from a school-days snack shop! It had rice cakes, fish cake, jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles), egg, cabbage and more — and the rice cake portion was quite generous! (Two servings felt like three)

Turned the heat down to medium and let it simmer a bit longer ❤️🔥 You know fried mandu tastes best a little soggy, right?!! It's been a while since I had jjolmyeon with instant tteokbokki, but jjolmyeon is a classic / and classics are love 🫶🏻 haha

They were wheat rice cakes shaped like rice cakes lol. The taste was exactly that spicy-sweet nostalgic flavor?! It really brought back memories of the tteokbokki I ate at snack shops back in school…💫 Instant tteokbokki is meant to be simmered down a bit more so the sauce really soaks in and tastes better ❤️🔥

The fried mandu and jjolmyeon were the real delicacy here ✨ Soaked slightly soggy, fully soaked up in the sauce!

Finishing with self-serve fried rice at Hyeonseonine
The fried rice at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is self-serve 💫 It comes with minced kimchi, corn kernels, rice, seaweed flakes, and sesame oil!

Fried rice is love 💖 I even shaped it into a heart haha. The instant tteokbokki set for two.. we were so full eating it together haha (Portion is on the generous side, so we ate our fill! There's a lot of rice cake in it). We almost couldn't finish the fried rice from being so full…! But we cleared it! ✨👍🏻

Savory and classic, with bits of kimchi and corn to bite into 🥄 I personally eat instant tteokbokki just to get to the fried rice — how about you? ☺️ You've got to finish it off with the fried rice… that's really eating instant tteokbokki properly, right?!
Who should eat at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch?
