I was hunting for a big, quiet Hongdae café to read in and stumbled on a real gem over in Seogyo-dong ✨ It's exactly that — a large Hongdae café where the whole building is decorated to feel cozy.
True to the café's name (which translates to "discovery of the inner self"), each space has its own concept so you can focus on yourself — a Hongdae café where you can rest while feeling emptiness, fullness, pause, and immersion 🌿
Between the careful drip coffee, the inventive desserts, and the calm atmosphere, I left very satisfied — a large Hongdae café!

Naemyeonui Balgyeon is a place you can happily stroll to along the Seogyo-dong back streets 🚶♀️ I visited around 4pm on a Saturday, and the moment I stepped in, the nature-friendly atmosphere was so strong it felt like walking through a forest — I nearly forgot I was in the middle of the city, which put me in a really good mood.
The whole building is set up as café and exhibition space, so it's on the larger side!
It's a large Hongdae café with a first floor, second floor, and a rooftop terrace on the third — though drinks and desserts are enjoyed comfortably on the 1st and 2nd floor seating ☕
Indoor terrarium and the seating choices on each floor
Naemyeonui Balgyeon feels less like a café and more like a gallery or exhibition space.
An indoor terrarium, a cute garden-like space, and a terrace area all blend together harmoniously, so just wandering around and looking at the space itself was fun.
Going up to the second floor, the seating styles were remarkably varied — every seat had a different mood, and I found myself thinking I'd have to try a different spot next time 💭
That day I settled near a window on the second floor, and the outdoor terrace seating, where you could feel a gentle breeze, looked really lovely too! In weather this cool these days, sitting outside to relax would be absolutely perfect 🍃
The space is so spacious and open that it's easy to settle in for a while, and with the music kept low and unobtrusive, it was the perfect immersive atmosphere for quietly reading a book or writing in a diary.
Panama Damarlic drip coffee and the corn pudding
They say the drip coffee lineup rotates regularly, and on the day I visited, one of the 9 drip beans on offer was already sold out — that's how popular it is.
While I was debating what to drink, the friendly owner asked about my taste and recommended a bean that would suit me. I went with the Panama Damarlic farm drip coffee ☕️, and paired it with the signature dessert, corn pudding.
Even a single cup of coffee was served on a pretty tray, styled like something out of a photo — it made me feel well looked after!
I had it iced, and the subtle, clean aroma came through fully, with an acidity that was never overwhelming — I felt good the whole time I was drinking it. If you love drip coffee, this is a large Hongdae café you have to visit 👏
And then the moment I'd been waiting for — the corn pudding! 🌽 I'd assumed it would just be smooth corn cream, but there were actual whole corn kernels mixed into the pudding, and the texture and flavor were incredible...🤍
On top, a light sprinkle of cracked black pepper made for a genuinely inventive, insanely good sweet-and-salty combo 🥺 It was nutty and delicious enough to put brand-name cakes to shame — I ate it in total admiration.
Is Naemyeonui Balgyeon worth a visit in Hongdae?
I couldn't think of a better space to step away from a busy daily routine and enjoy some time to myself 🌿
Thanks to the calm, quiet atmosphere, I flew through the book I'd brought along, and the careful drip coffee and dessert left me feeling filled up, mentally as well.
