Hongdae café with a rooftop forest theme: Naemyeonui Balgyeon

In short

Naemyeonui Balgyeon is a seasonal, experience-focused café in Mapo, Seoul. On a late Sunday afternoon, I explored Season 2, “Rest and Sprout,” and had a Forest Cloud and Milliphilly Milky Oolong Tea. Verdict: a lovely Hongdae date spot for quietly pausing and sharing a feeling.

Do you ever want to catch your breath in the middle of a busy day and quietly look into the heart you may have lost along the way? Step just slightly away from the complicated, bustling streets of Hongdae and into a residential alley in Mangwon-dong and Seogyo-dong, and there is a large, atmospheric Hongdae café converted from a house.

It is Naemyeonui Balgyeon (내면의 발견), a special, seasonal space designed around experiences. It was great for a Hongdae date, and a Seogyo-dong café where I could awaken my senses and reflect on taking a break in my own way.

A quiet house-conversion café between Hongik University and Hapjeong stations

The large Hongdae café Naemyeonui Balgyeon sits in a peaceful residential alley in Seogyo-dong, between Hongik University Station and Hapjeong Station. Just removed from the noise of the main streets, it is an ideal place to relax quietly.

This large Hongdae café occupies 70 pyeong across three floors, including the rooftop, in a distinctive converted-house layout. The house-conversion style blends unusual architecture with a modern sensibility, and even the entrance had a different kind of aura.

The four themes of Season 2, “Rest and Sprout”

Naemyeonui Balgyeon, a Hongdae and Mangwon café, is a very distinctive Seogyo-dong café that presents a new theme, space, and experience each season. The current Season 2 theme is “Rest and Sprout.”

It speaks to the form that rest takes for each of us. In particular, the space is arranged around the motif of the film <Little Forest>.

Discovery — the four themes of Season 2, “Rest and Sprout”

  • Emptying: a space to clear away complicated thoughts and stress
  • Filling: time to fill myself with clear energy and new feelings. This was my favorite space.
  • Stopping: a moment to slow the pace of a busy daily life and simply stay still
  • Immersion: my own forest, where I focus fully on my emotions and five senses

The rooftop space was lovely too.

Exploring the space late on Sunday afternoon

I visited toward the end of the weekend, in the late afternoon on Sunday. Simply taking my time looking around each part of the space made me feel as though my emotions were being gently awakened. It would make a great Hongdae date course, too—a charming space for having deep conversations about one another’s daily lives and rest.

Forest Cloud & Milliphilly Milky Oolong Tea

Forest Cloud and milky oolong tea for the evening

The large Hongdae café Naemyeonui Balgyeon is as serious about the quality and range of its drinks as it is about its atmospheric interior. From standard espresso drinks to filter coffee, seasonal specialty drinks, and a premium tea line, there is plenty to enjoy for coffee enthusiasts too.

Coffee and premium tea menu at the café

Since I arrived close to evening, I chose two signature drinks that let me fully enjoy this place’s distinctive mood while keeping the caffeine burden low.

Forest Cloud and Milky Oolong Tea

Signature drink: Forest Cloud

This signature drink suits Season 2’s theme, “My Own Little Forest,” perfectly. A rich, pleasantly bitter mugwort/matcha base comes together with the soft, fluffy cream on top. Its pleasing clean finish and sweetness washed away the day’s fatigue.

Premium tea: Milliphilly Milky Oolong Tea

This is an elegant tea menu item that is easy to savor in place of coffee in the evening. The clean character unique to oolong tea was gently joined by a milky, nutty aroma, which was fascinating.

Naemyeonui Balgyeon brought my Sunday evening to a calm close

Naemyeonui Balgyeon, where I could discover my own rest and feelings in a quiet Seogyo-dong alley! As a comfortable, spacious 70-pyeong Hongdae café with an open layout that never feels stifling, it is lovely for enjoying leisurely time alone. I also recommend it for an atmospheric Hongdae date where you can share a sense of rest.

If you need a brief “stop” and “filling up” away from noisy daily life, how about experiencing your own little forest at Naemyeonui Balgyeon, a Seogyo-dong café?
