Comparing 4 breads at Boulangerie Copain, a Mangwon-dong bakery

In short

Boulangerie Copain is a small neighborhood bakery in a Mangwon-dong alley on Huiujeong-ro in Mapo, Seoul, known for the baguette and croissant featured on the Korean TV show Life's Masters. This visit compared four deliberately different bakes side by side: the croissant, the fig cream cheese baguette, angbutter (red bean and butter bread), and the ham cheese baguette sandwich. At Boulangerie Copain the breads that let their own texture and flavor lead, rather than flashy toppings, were the most memorable.

If you go to Mangwon-dong, it feels like a waste to eat somewhere good and just walk past the bakeries. Every alley seems to hide a bakery with its own personality, and by the time you've wandered through Mangwon Market, you naturally end up taking home a loaf or two.

This time I went to Boulangerie Copain, a spot that's hard to skip on any Mangwon-dong bakery crawl. It was featured on Life's Masters, a Korean TV show, so I was especially curious about the baguette and croissant — and this time I decided to try a few different kinds.

Four kinds of bread picked at Boulangerie Copain

I picked a croissant, a fig cream cheese baguette, angbutter, and a ham cheese baguette sandwich — a little bit of everything, from hard bread to pastry to sandwich.

Boulangerie Copain: a small bakery in a Mangwon-dong alley

Boulangerie Copain felt less like a large bakery chain and more like a cozy neighborhood shop. Walk in and you'll find the breads neatly lined up on the shelves — and once you start looking through them one by one, there's more to choose from than you'd expect.

The baguettes especially caught my eye. They look similar on the outside, but the flavor changes quite a bit depending on what's inside, so it wasn't easy to pick just one.

In the end my bread bag got heavier than I'd originally planned. 😂 Some of it was for later at home, but a few things I set aside to eat right away.

How flaky is the Boulangerie Copain croissant? 🥐

The menu I was most curious about after seeing Life's Masters was the croissant. The outside was thin with crisp, well-defined layers, so the first thing I noticed biting in was that shattering, flaky texture.

But it wasn't just crisp on the outside — the inside was soft and moist, so the contrast in texture was clear. Croissants can get overwhelming fast if the butter flavor is too strong, but this one leaned into a nutty, savory quality instead, which made it great with coffee.

The layers stayed crisp all the way through, so even pulling it apart by hand gave that proper pastry feel. If you like croissants, this is the one to try first.

Fig cream cheese baguette: the best combination of the four 🥖

Of everything I tried this time, the fig cream cheese baguette stood out the most. It's a combination of the baguette's plain, savory flavor, the sweetness of the fig, and the soft, slightly tangy cream cheese.

You get that distinct little crunch from the fig seeds, and the cream cheese softens things nicely, so a single bite carried several layers of flavor and texture. Best of all, the baguette itself wasn't overly hard or chewy.

It kept that classic crisp-outside, chewy-inside quality of hard bread, but wasn't a struggle to eat alongside the filling. If you like the fig and cream cheese combo, this should suit your taste well.

Angbutter at Boulangerie Copain: the baguette makes it 🧈

Can't skip angbutter either. The red bean and butter pairing matters, of course, but personally I think the quality of the baguette itself is what really counts for this menu. Copain's angbutter sandwiches red bean paste and butter between a plain baguette, so one bite brought both nuttiness and sweetness at once.

The red bean sweetness didn't overpower — instead you get the butter's nutty richness and the baguette's savoriness together. The cold butter makes for a firm first bite, but as the baguette and red bean paste blend in, the whole thing softens up. Personally, this was the best pairing I had with an Americano.

Ham cheese baguette sandwich as a quick meal 🥪

Eating nothing but bread felt slightly lacking, so I also picked up the ham cheese baguette sandwich. It's a familiar combo — ham, cheese, and vegetables inside a baguette — but as always, a sandwich changes completely when the bread itself is good.

Between the chewy baguette, the vegetables added a crisp bite, and the salty ham and cheese made it more filling than I expected. This leaned more toward letting the plain bread and ingredients speak for themselves rather than a sandwich built around a strong sauce. It would also be good to grab to go if you want a quick meal while wandering around Mangwon-dong.

Four breads compared: what each one does best

This time I deliberately picked items with different personalities.

  • 🥐 The croissant suits you if you like crisp layers and buttery flavor
  • 🥖 The fig cream cheese baguette is recommended if you like sweet fig with creamy, tangy cheese
  • 🧈 Angbutter suits fans of the classic red bean and butter combo
  • 🥪 The ham cheese baguette sandwich was good when you want something filling rather than a snack

If it were my first visit, I'd probably pick one croissant along with one baguette item.

There's real fun in comparing the bread's own texture against the menus built around added ingredients.

Worth a stop on a Mangwon-dong bakery crawl

Mangwon-dong is a neighborhood good for wandering through the market and stopping by restaurants and cafés, so rather than just visiting one spot, it's more fun to walk the area and see what's around. If you like the basic flavors of baguette or croissant, Boulangerie Copain is worth a stop.

This time I tried several different kinds, and the ones where the bread's own texture and flavor mattered most — like the baguette and croissant — stuck with me more than anything piled high with toppings. If you're planning a bakery crawl in Mangwon-dong, starting with the baguette and croissant at Boulangerie Copain sounds like a solid place to begin. 🥖🥐
