Mild crab soup for parents at a Yuryang-dong Cheonan spot: Huni Gejang
In short
Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a blue crab soup and soy-marinated crab restaurant at the entrance of the Yuryang-dong food street in Cheonan, Chungnam. On a weekday evening the writer came with their parents, ordered the small crab soup (4 crabs) for 70,000 won made non-spicy, and rated the side dishes — stir-fried seaweed stems and salted squid — and the sticky steamed rice the highlights. With parking for 50 cars, 100-won baby rice and a microwave on site, Huni Gejang is an easy choice for a family meal.

Are side dish refills free?

You can just stay seated and order side dish refills easily through the HiOrder tablet.
Which side dishes come with the meal?
The bowls have a bit of weight to them, so they look a bit upscale.

Bracken namul (fernbrake), napa cabbage kimchi, stir-fried seaweed stem, gim, squid jeotgal (salted fermented squid), sundubu (soft tofu).

The stir-fried seaweed stems are the best side dish
I actually don't like stir-fried seaweed stem. It's usually fishy and bland, so wherever I go I take one bite and put down my chopsticks — but the stir-fried seaweed stem at Huni Gejang, I genuinely enjoyed eating. The seasoning was different from other restaurants. Slightly spicy and savory. And most importantly, not fishy at all. I wanted to pay separately just to take some home. My parents also said this restaurant's stir-fried seaweed stem was delicious. I want to eat it again just writing this blog post.

Squid jeotgal, my favorite kind of jeotgal, showed up as a side dish!! It was so chewy-and-tender, genuinely delicious. Ah, I love squid jeotgal so much.

And the rice here is genuinely delicious. They must use good rice. It's chewy, really sticky-good. Everyone at the table was marveling as they ate. Looking at the HiOrder description for the steamed rice, it said the rice was grown directly by the owner's in-laws in Cheonan — their in-laws must be farming masters.

They also give you disposable gloves so it's easier to pick apart the crab.
Small blue crab soup, 70,000 won, ordered non-spicy for my parents
The crab soup arrived.
The portion is genuinely huge
They say it's 100% domestic blue crab from Yeonpyeongdo. The pot is deep, so there's a ton of broth.
They give you a 5-minute sand timer — once the sand runs out, you can eat. It's already fully cooked by then, but for the best rich broth, it's better to keep it boiling.

The visuals are ama~zing. Since my mom can't handle spicy food, we specifically asked them to make it as mild as possible.
How much crab soup you actually get
Check the video for the full visual and table setup. The crabs are already halved, so you can easily pick them up with the tongs. Packed full of meat, great yield.
Let's dig in properly. The top shell comes off easily by hand. Just snip off the gill area with small scissors.
Blue crabs packed with meat
The yield is really good. The crab meat is soft and tender too — hold it in one hand, take a bite, and your mouth fills up with meat.

Ah, so good. It's been a while since I had crab soup — I'd forgotten what this taste was like.

Once you've picked all the crab clean, it's rice time. Ladle the broth packed with radish and green onion into a shallow bowl and eat it with rice — so clean and refreshing.

There was so much radish and broth that we left some. *Note: leftover food can't be packed to go. It's posted in big letters at the restaurant that this isn't allowed due to food poisoning risk.

We wiped it out.
Extras at Huni Gejang: free coffee and a microwave

There's Americano and instant mix coffee, plus a microwave for baby food. They're really thorough, so families with kids can visit comfortably. And a baby menu for ₩100 — this place is honestly perfect to bring kids to. There's also steamed egg on the extra menu. I want to bring my niece next time, haha.
Final verdict on Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch
If you're looking for a soy crab or crab soup spot in Yuryang-dong, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, I recommend 'Huni Gejang.' The side dishes overall were delicious, and my parents were satisfied too. This must be what people mean by a restaurant with real cooking skill.
