Ganghwa duck restaurant with king shrimp jumulleok: Deok Ori Jumulleok

In short

Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch is a charcoal-seared duck restaurant in Gilsang-myeon, Ganghwa, Incheon, near Jeondeungsa Temple and Manisan. A Naver reservation on a weekday before noon brought the shrimp-duck jumulleok (380g) for 25,000 won, with plump king shrimp and a deep charcoal-smoke aroma, plus 3,000 won heart-shaped fried rice to finish that was not too salty. Deok Ori Jumulleok closes once the duck sells out, so booking ahead or calling first is the safe move.

A long-overdue trip to Ganghwa Island! I had lunch at Deok Ori Jumulleok, an Onsu-ri favorite located near Jeondeungsa Temple, which is almost always mentioned as a must-visit when people talk about touring Ganghwa Island.

This Ganghwa restaurant with easy access to landmarks like Manisan, Ganghwa Luge, and Dongmak Beach is famous for its duck jumulleok (spicy stir-fried duck) grilled with real charcoal-fire flavor 🦆 Since both my partner and I love duck jumulleok, we headed over super excited 😸

Oh, and since Deok Ori Jumulleok is a well-known Ganghwa restaurant, I'd recommend booking a reservation before you go!

Deok Ori Jumulleok, this Ganghwa duck restaurant, has parking space for around 7-8 cars, so you don't need to worry about where to park.

Entrance of Deok Ori Jumulleok with business hours posted

It's open from 11am to 9pm. After reading a few reviews, I learned that Deok Ori Jumulleok only sells a set amount of meat each day for freshness, and closes once it's sold out. So if you're planning to visit without a reservation in the late afternoon, it's better to call ahead! We booked through Naver Reservation before going.

Interior of Deok Ori Jumulleok with lunchtime customers

We got there just before noon and about half the tables were already filled, and customers kept coming in the whole time we ate — this Jeondeungsa-area restaurant clearly stays busy! The interior had a cozy, homey feel, and there was a trash bin right under the table, which made it easy to toss things right away (I'm someone who can't stand a messy table..!)

They had baby chairs and bibs ready too, and water was self-serve. You could also grab your own lettuce wraps at the self-service bar, and a sign said to ask the kitchen for any other side dish refills.

Duck jumulleok is the star, with shrimp or squid options added in as sides. The menu itself wasn't very large.

What does the shrimp-duck jumulleok taste like?

Table spread of side dishes at Deok Ori Jumulleok

We ordered the shrimp-duck jumulleok, the signature dish at Deok Ori Jumulleok, this duck restaurant near Jeondeungsa in Ganghwa. A variety of homemade side dishes were laid out, giving off that warm, generous feeling you'd get if a grandmother served you a spread at her countryside house (not that I actually have one).

The duck is smoked over charcoal first, so the fire aroma and smoky flavor are incredible 👏👏👏 The visuals are insane!

And finally, the duck jumulleok arrives 🩷 Since it's charcoal-fired first, the smoky aroma really hits and makes it look even more appetizing, and the staff mixed in more vegetables to finish it off for us.

After the pre-charred duck jumulleok cooks a bit longer on the tabletop grill, they add more perilla leaves and chives and stir-fry it further — here's what it looks like after that! Just wait about 3 more minutes and it's ready to eat 💓

Fully cooked spicy-sweet duck jumulleok

The duck jumulleok at this Ganghwa favorite had such an appealing spicy-sweet sauce, and the flavor overall was really good. The seasoning wasn't overpowering but still had a rich taste, so I kept going back for more 🫶

I was surprised at how plump and huge the shrimp were haha, big meant extra delicious! Not just the duck jumulleok, but all the vegetables, sweet potato, and rice cakes mixed in were genuinely tasty, one by one.

Heart-shaped fried rice cooked in the leftover sauce

Why you should order the 3,000 won fried rice to finish

It was so good I almost couldn't stop scraping the pan clean, but we left about a third of the sauce and ordered the fried rice! The heart-shaped fried rice, carefully made, was tasty without being too intense in flavor. They asked us to tell them if it was too salty or too bland, but compared to some places where the fried rice comes out way too salty, this level was exactly right for me.

That was my visit to Deok Ori Jumulleok, a restaurant near Jeondeungsa I'd recommend to anyone heading out for a Ganghwa Island trip!
