Fish tanks and the atmosphere inside Eosa Chulto

A 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 3, that's where Eosa Chulto is. As a sashimi restaurant, it has a good view of the tank and a slightly pocha (street-tent bar) atmosphere that felt great for drinking.

Walking in, I saw the squid and it was seriously huge! Probably the biggest squid I've seen lately...! And the tank was really clean, haha.

At 6:30pm on a weekday there were still some seats open, but by around 7pm the place filled up in an instant. You've got to come straight after work, haha.

The restroom is inside the store. When you're drinking, it's definitely better to have the restroom indoors.

Menu and prices at Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch

Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch had a huge range: seasonal dishes, live fish sashimi, set menus, seafood, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), stews, and meal items. Great to have so much choice, but a little hard to decide, so I put together a table!

  • Seasonal / new menu
  • Sashimi · set menus
  • Seafood · mulhoe · health food
  • Lunch specials
  • Stews · meals · anju (drinking snacks)
  • Fried dishes · noodle add-ons

Seasonal menu items and prices can vary by season. When we visited, the squid sashimi order came to ₩37,000.

There's a review event running too, so give it a try! We got a free bottle of soju out of it!

Free side dishes and corn cheese

Since Eosa Chulto Hongdae is a value-focused place, the basic side dishes were pretty ordinary, but the corn cheese was delicious as always, haha.

Autumn gizzard shad sashimi: are the bones too tough?

Fall means gizzard shad sashimi! We quickly ordered it first at Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch. The owner's hands were so fast, prepping and serving the sashimi in no time!

Plate of fall-season gizzard shad sashimi

Gizzard shad sashimi can be uncomfortable to eat if the bones are too tough, but Eosa Chulto's version had bones that weren't too harsh — just right. It didn't bother me while chewing, and I could really taste the nutty flavor and texture unique to gizzard shad. I was glad we ordered the seasonal dish as the weather cooled off. Highly recommend this one.

A generous plate of live squid sashimi

Live squid sashimi at 37,000 won: how big is the plate?

Next we ordered the live squid sashimi, and the portion was really huge. Even compared to the squid sashimi we had recently in Sokcho, this felt more satisfying for the price! Both the amount and taste were really, really satisfying. No need to go all the way to Gangwon-do.

Ordering the gizzard shad and squid sashimi together was still cheap, which was great, and it meant we got to enjoy seasonal raw fish all in one go.

I'm not usually one for chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), but squid sashimi really does need it! It tasted good enough that I think we'll be coming back to Eosa Chulto often this fall.

Fish head spicy stew with sujebi dumpling-soup add-on

The 9,000 won spicy fish-head stew with sujebi add-on

After the sashimi we ordered the spicy stew. Even as a fish-head-based stew, there was surprisingly plenty of fish meat, and the broth was refreshing — went great as a drinking snack. At only ₩9,000, it's not a big commitment, but the contents were satisfying, so I'd definitely recommend it when drinking.

On top of that we added the sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) add-on. Sujebi add-on is ₩1,000, ramyeon add-on is also ₩1,000, so pick whichever you like. (Kalguksu noodle add-on is ₩2,000.) We went with sujebi, which soaked up the broth nicely and made for a hearty finish. If you order the spicy stew, I'd recommend the sujebi add-on over ramyeon!

Is Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch worth a second visit?

Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch, a sashimi restaurant in Hongdae, was great for its wide variety of cheap seasonal dishes! We ordered gizzard shad and squid, but a lot of the tables around us were eating the salt-grilled king prawns. We didn't order it this time, but we definitely need to try it next visit!

With its variety of seasonal dishes and cheap stew and noodle add-ons, Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch seems like a great fit if you're looking for a relaxed sashimi restaurant in Hongdae for a casual drink. Stop by if you want fall-season gizzard shad sashimi together with a generous portion of squid sashimi. 100% would visit again!
