Hongdae sashimi set for two with spicy fish stew: Eosa Chulto
In short
Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch is a sashimi and seafood restaurant a 5-minute walk from Exit 2 of Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. Two friends ordered the Chulto Set for two at 59,000 won, which comes with a small seasonal sashimi platter, two kinds of seafood and spicy fish stew, then added sujebi (hand-torn dough flakes) to the stew for 1,000 won plus a bowl of rice to round out the meal. Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch works well as a Hongdae meeting spot for drinks over sashimi and a filling bowl of stew to finish.

We were meeting up near Hongik University Station and, while looking for something to eat, started craving sashimi with spicy fish stew. Since you can have a drink with the sashimi and still fill up on stew afterward, sashimi seemed perfect — so I decided to meet my friend at Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch, which also had a great location.

Where is Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch? Hours and parking
Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch is a 5-minute walk from Exit 2 of Hongik University Station, making it a good meeting spot. The lunch special menu photo out front also caught my eye.
- Hours: 11:30–23:00 (closed Sundays)
- Parking: paid parking at Hyeonwoo Building in front of the restaurant (1 free spot if you contact the restaurant in advance)
Inside Eosa Chulto: dining room and group seating for 48

The interior was clean, and the fish paintings stood out. Maybe because the weather was nice when I visited, everyone seemed to be sitting near the entrance. The restroom is inside too, so that was convenient, and with a reservation the hall can seat up to 48 people, so it works for group dinners or gatherings.

The tank outside was also kept clean, so you can trust what you're eating, right?

There were shrimp and squid in the tank, and since they're in season, they looked in great condition. Maybe that's why so many people at the restaurant were having raw shrimp sashimi and grilled shrimp. With the shrimp right there in the tank, passing foreign tourists seemed fascinated too, stopping to look and take photos...

Seasonal picks and the lunch menu at Eosa Chulto
Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch has a well put-together seasonal recommendation menu, so there's a wide range to choose from. Gizzard shad, raw shrimp sashimi, grilled shrimp, squid sashimi sets — you kind of have to try these right now, don't you?!

The lunch menu is also on offer and looked like good value (orders possible 11:30–15:00). Stews and rice meals are sold in the evening too, so it seemed like a neighborhood sashimi spot where locals come by for hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl) with a drink.
What comes in the 59,000 won Chulto Set for two
What we ordered was the Chulto Set for two at ₩59,000. It comes with a small seasonal sashimi platter, two kinds of seafood, and spicy fish stew.

The basic side dish spread came out with exactly what you need for eating sashimi. The pan-fried jeon (savory pancake) wasn't pre-made either — it came out freshly fried and warm, which made it great to eat.

The two kinds of seafood, sea squirt and sea cucumber, came out and you could tell they were fresh. Not a stingy amount for two people either.

The sea squirt had a sweet flavor, and the abalone had a nice chewy texture~

Which fish come on the seasonal sashimi platter?
The sashimi platter came with rockfish, flounder, and small yellowtail. It's made up of whatever fish the restaurant has on hand that day.

Honestly, since I ordered the Chulto Set first and then saw the seasonal menu on the wall, I wondered if I should've ordered from the seasonal menu instead. But after eating the sashimi, it was fresh and delicious, so I was satisfied with my choice.

With rockfish, flounder, salmon, and small yellowtail, it was varied enough that we didn't get tired of it.

Why the 1,000 won sujebi add-on to the spicy fish stew is a must
Finally, the spicy fish stew arrived. At Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch you have to ask staff for the stew, so make sure to request it as you're finishing up the sashimi. I added the dumpling noodle sarl and a bowl of rice. The dumpling noodle add-on is essential — the portion was bigger than at other sashimi restaurants, and it's only ₩1,000? Absolutely get it! Everyone knows the stew tastes better the longer you simmer it, right?! Finishing off with the spicy fish stew as a meal made for a satisfying dinner.
Is Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch worth it?
Eosa Chulto Hongdae Branch is close to Exit 2 of Hongik University Station, making it a great spot for meetups or group dinners, and the menu is varied enough to give you plenty of choices. In particular, a lot of tables were having raw shrimp sashimi and grilled shrimp, so next time I'd go for shrimp sashimi 😁 The Chulto Set, with its two seafoods, sashimi platter, and spicy fish stew, was a solid full sashimi spread — a good choice near Hongik University Station.
