Gwangju sashimi restaurant lunch: yubikki makhoe and 10 raw shrimp
In short
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Gwangju Wolsan Branch is a sashimi restaurant in Wolsan-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju known for its shrimp and prawn sets. Hamo (pike conger) shabu-shabu is no longer on the menu, so the writer and her mother ordered the yubikki (blanched fish) and raw shrimp set: the yubikki tasted closer to makhoe (rough-cut raw fish), but the 10 raw shrimp were firm and fresh, and the butter-grilled shrimp heads and 5,000-won spicy fish stew finished the meal well. For shrimp and prawns, Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan is the answer.

Gwangju Wolsan-dong seafood restaurant Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha, yubikki / raw shrimp

Why we went back to Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha in Wolsan-dong
Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha branches are popping up everywhere lately haha. I feel like I visited Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha the most during fall to winter, because of the shrimp, prawns, and amberjack ~~~

Ordering the yubikki and raw shrimp set instead of hamo shabu-shabu
This place is great for its 2-person, 3-person set structures. I was planning to get the hamo (pike conger) shabu-shabu, but they said it's no longer available, so after some thought I went with the yubikki and raw shrimp set.

What comes with the set: side dishes and seaweed mulhoe
When I came back from the bathroom, the full basic spread was already laid out haha. I hadn't had proper mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) this year, and this seaweed-mulhoe-like side was so good. They sell mulhoe too, so if you like sweet and tangy flavors, go check it out.
Yubikki closer to makhoe, raw shrimp firm and sweet
Ta-da ~~ Honestly, the yubikki wasn't quite true yubikki, more like makhoe (rough-cut raw fish)? Still tasted great with perilla leaves and ssamjang (dipping sauce).
There were 10 raw shrimp, not huge in size but definitely not small either. You could really feel the freshness .. because they were so firm!!!!! Mom and I both love raw shrimp so we ate happily 🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐

Looking at these photos makes me want to eat again .. 🐷🐷🐷

Butter-grilled shrimp heads: buttery, not greasy
They also brought out butter-grilled shrimp heads. No spicy kick, just buttery!! But not greasy either, so it went down easy. They were big, so there was a nice bite to them.

The 5,000-won spicy fish stew and a dumpling dough tip
Honestly I didn't expect much from a ₩5,000 spicy fish stew, but the fish was packed with meat, and instead of being sharply spicy it was just slightly tangy like kimchi jjigae — which I actually loved. They give you dumpling dough to tear and add yourself haha. Personal tip: stretch it out thin and tear it in ~~~~~ ✂️ Eating it thin meant the broth soaked in well and the texture was great.

There isn't a ton of vegetables, but that's fine!! We love mixing rice into the broth, so we ordered rice and let it boil away 🤤

Chive pancakes from the self bar
If you like savory pancakes, the self bar has chive pancake ingredients ready to cook yourself.
Who should eat at Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha Wolsan?
Had a satisfying meal at Hwanggeum Hoe Pocha in Wolsan-dong 🍺🍻 The tables are wide, so it seems good for groups. Shrimp and prawns are the highlight here!! If you're craving grilled king prawns or raw shrimp sashimi, this place is worth considering ~~ 🤤🔥 It was so nice to have a happy lunch with my mom. With a full belly, I got sleepy .. went straight home and passed out haha. They're currently running a ₩1,900 soju/beer promo, so drinkers should hurry over.
