An honest review of Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, a mandu (dumpling) hot pot spot near Paju's Book City that's become a go-to Paju Lotte Outlet restaurant.

A while back I went on a family drive out to Paju. The weather was nice and I wanted to do some shopping too, so we went, and once it was mealtime we looked for a nearby restaurant. I was after something easy for my kid to eat and gentle on the stomach, and that's how we ended up at Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu, which had built a word-of-mouth reputation as a Paju Lotte Outlet restaurant.

How long was the lunch-peak wait, and what is the waiting area like?

We visited during the lunch peak, and sure enough, being a popular spot, there was a wait. We registered on the Catch Table kiosk and waited a bit, but the waiting area was spacious and kept nice and cool, so the time went by without feeling tedious.

While waiting, there was a dessert corner set up with cool misutgaru (roasted grain drink) and nostalgic crispy, nutty rice crackers.

I could tell the owner had thought this through, offering it freely to enjoy before or after the meal. My kid got to sip a cool cup of misutgaru while waiting, which kept things from getting boring.

Stepping inside, the ceilings were high and the walls were full glass windows, so there was no stuffy feeling at all.

Overall the space was kept impressively clean, and the tables were spaced generously, making for a comfortable atmosphere to focus on the meal.

Looking through the tablet menu on the table, the lineup was clean and well put together.

The signature dish is the Pyeongyang mandu hot pot, featuring carefully hand-pleated mandu (dumplings) along with a variety of vegetables. You can choose mild or spicy broth depending on your taste, so it works whether you're dining with kids or you love a fiery broth.

There's also a clear, clean Pyeongyang mandu soup, and Pyeongyang mul-naengmyeon and bibim-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles, water-based and spicy-mixed), perfect summer specialties, so there's a good range to pick from depending on your mood. Sides like steamed mandu and sliced boiled meat (suyuk) are also available, great for sharing if you're a group.

What we ordered and what the self-serve bar offers

We wanted to try a bit of everything, so we ordered generously, mostly the signature items.

After ordering, we headed to the self-serve bar in the center of the restaurant. The basic side dishes were neatly laid out: baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi), regular kimchi, and pickled radish. The crisp, clean baek-kimchi and the spicy kimchi both paired really well with the mandu, and we could refill whatever ran low at the self-serve bar easily.

They also had a dedicated tableware set and baby chairs for customers with kids, which felt like thoughtful attention to detail.

How each dish tasted

After a short wait, our dishes were set down one by one.

I loved it from the moment I saw it: a big platter piled high with freshly-pleated, hefty mandu (dumplings) alongside fresh bean sprouts, napa cabbage, bok choy, mushrooms, and boiled beef.

The bubbling spicy broth wasn't heavy or murky at all — the deep, clean flavor was outstanding.

Cutting into the mandu, they were packed full of tofu, ground meat, and vegetables, with a clean, savory flavor and no artificial aftertaste.

Pairing it with the baek-kimchi or pickled radish from the basic side dishes was a really nice combination.

Finishing off the hot pot by adding kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to the leftover broth was truly the best part.

Overall, the seasoning wasn't heavy, and the natural flavors of the ingredients really came through, so I felt completely clean and comfortable after eating, with no bloating.

With the care put into the mandu and the fresh vegetable combination, this place feels like a great fit whether you're bringing your parents or dining out as a family with kids.
