Gwangju Korean restaurant for soy-braised oxtail dinner: Jeongdam
In short
Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in braised oxtail, in the Gusicheong (old city hall) alley of Dong-gu, Gwangju. The order was soy-braised oxtail with glass noodles, rice cakes and potatoes plus a side of sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), and the oxtail fell off the bone at the touch of a chopstick in a sweet, savory soy sauce that was good enough to mix into rice at the end. With two full floors of seating, Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch suits family dinners, group meals and an evening drink alike.

Today I visited Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch, known as one of the go-to restaurants near Gusicheong in Gwangju. What I ate was so good I had to share it with you guys.
Location: 12-1 Munhwajeondang-ro 35beon-gil, 1-2F, Dong-gu, Gwangju, South Korea / Hours: Mon–Sun 17:00–24:00 / Parking: alley parking available
It's famous as an oxtail braise spot, so I went in with high expectations — and it really delivered. The place is spacious and clean, great for a family meal, hanging out with friends, or even a light evening drink.
Where Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch is and what it looks like
Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch sits in the alley off Munhwajeondang-ro 35beon-gil in Dong-gu, Gwangju, and it looked tidy and well-kept even before I stepped inside. The exterior has a clean overall feel, so first-timers shouldn't have trouble finding it. If you're looking for somewhere to eat around Gusicheong, this is worth a visit.

Seating on floors 1 and 2: can it handle groups?
Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch has seating not just on the first floor but the second as well, so it can easily fit a group. Walking in, I was surprised at how much bigger it felt than I expected.
There were plenty of seats with generous spacing between tables, so it never felt cramped or crowded. What stood out most was how spotless the place was kept — it made the whole meal feel that much more comfortable. The interior is clean and nicely decorated too, making it a good fit for both family outings and casual meals with friends.
Even the restroom was kept as clean as the dining room, which made me appreciate that they pay attention to details like that.

I could especially see this being a great spot for a light evening drink alongside the delicious oxtail braise. The friendly owner brought over utensils sitting in warm water along with wet wipes as soon as we sat down.

What we ordered: soy-braised oxtail plus sundubu jjigae
At Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch, we ordered the signature soy braised oxtail and added sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) as a side. The menu had a good variety, but even though the oxtail braise alone is filling, I figured pairing it with a stew would make finishing a whole bowl of rice inevitable — so we got both. Dishes like this really do taste best with rice.

The receipt review event at Jeongdam
If you follow and leave a review with your receipt, you get a seasonal fruit or a perilla oil fried egg — definitely worth doing 💗

What comes with the meal: the banchan spread
The banchan (side dishes) at Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch came out neat and thoughtfully arranged — braised soybeans, mushroom jeon (pan-fried mushroom), Vienna sausages, pickled peppers, and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi). They arrived shortly after ordering, and I heard they make the banchan fresh every day.
Maybe that's why it didn't taste like the usual side dishes — it really had that home-cooked, made-with-care flavor. I kept picking at them one by one before the oxtail even arrived, and before I knew it, the plates were nearly empty. When the banchan is this good, it gets you even more excited for the main dish.

The sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew)
The sundubu jjigae smelled amazing as soon as it arrived. It came out bubbling hot, and pairing it with the oxtail braise turned out to be a great combination.
It went well with rice too, and made a perfect addition on the side whenever the oxtail braise alone wasn't quite enough.

How tender is the soy-braised oxtail?
The soy braised oxtail at Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch was so tender that even a light touch with chopsticks made the meat fall right off. When it finally arrived, it looked incredibly appetizing — piled high with glass noodles, carrots, rice cakes and potatoes alongside the oxtail, generous enough at a glance. The soy-based sauce in particular was seriously delicious.

Taking a bite, there was no chewiness or dryness at all — it just melted softly in my mouth.

The sauce wasn't just salty soy seasoning either — it had real sweetness and umami that kept me reaching for more 🥹. The glass noodles soaked up the sauce perfectly, so dipping the chewy noodles fully into it was fantastic, and the potatoes and rice cakes had absorbed the seasoning nicely too, making every bite fun to eat.
How is it this soft and tender — a true oxtail braise specialist. I felt so glad I came, it was so good I couldn't stop eating..❤️

I could totally understand why this place has a reputation for repeat visitors once I tried it myself. If you're looking for a solid, satisfying meal near Gusicheong in Gwangju, Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch is a great choice. If you're on the hunt for the best oxtail braise in Gwangju, this will especially suit anyone who loves tender oxtail and rich soy seasoning.

Mixing rice into the leftover oxtail sauce
It's the kind of flavor that makes you polish off a whole bowl of rice without even realizing it — I kept scooping more without thinking. I honestly can't remember the last time I enjoyed a bowl of rice this much.

Now I understand why Jeongdam is so often mentioned as a go-to spot for oxtail braise in Gwangju — the sauce alone was so good that mixing it into rice turned out to be an even better treat than eating the meat on its own.

In the end I ate more than half of it myself, haha. At first the portion looked big enough that I thought we might leave some, but between how good it was and mixing the leftover rice in, it all disappeared before I knew it. Right down to the last bite, the sauce was so good that mixing rice into the leftover seasoning is what stuck with me the most. Tender oxtail, sauce packed with umami, and thoughtfully made banchan — overall, this was a really satisfying meal.

Final take: who Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch is for
The place is spacious and comfortable, so it works well for group visits, and the clean atmosphere makes it a solid pick for a family meal, dinner with friends, or an evening drink. If you want truly tender oxtail braise, I'd strongly recommend this as one of the best oxtail braise spots in Gwangju.
