Jeju Korean restaurant with drum-cooked dakdoritang: Deureomtong

In short

Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang is a Korean restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju, where dakdoritang cooks on a drum-shaped table burner. My friend and I simmered the Original Dakdoritang for 10 minutes with ₩7,000 gyeran-mari, and loved the generous rice cakes, quail eggs, and tender chicken. Verdict: a seriously hearty lunch recommendation!

When You’re Craving Dakdoritang in Nohyeong-dong

It had been a while since I met up with my friend, so we decided to have lunch together. Korean food? Western food? What should we eat? After much debate, we chose dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken)!!!!! My friend and I both absolutely love dakdoritang, and there was this unusual dakdoritang place in Nohyeong-dong, so we came to check it out.

You can park right next door or along the street! We found a spot right beside the restaurant, so parking was easy.

Dakdoritang Simmered on a Drum

Dakdoritang cooked right away on a drum!!! Every table has its own drum~ Oh, what a fun feature~~~~~~ And all the windows were open, which made it feel wonderfully airy. I loved being able to eat while watching people pass by outside.

The weather had finally cooled down, so they did not need the air conditioning; with the doors open, a gentle breeze drifted in and it was so refreshing~~~ The breeze was amazing..... It really hit me: autumn had arrived. So nice... That brutal heat was finally coming to an end.... Heat, go away.. Please...

Original Dakdoritang and Self-Serve Side Dishes

I debated between the Original and aged-kimchi versions, then picked the Original Dakdoritang! They also sold a whole chicken, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), and dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken). There were loads of other choices too, including giant pork cutlet, shredded-potato pancake, and spicy-chili chive pancake. I love dakgalbi too, so next time I have to come back for that~~~!!

Extra side dishes are self-serve~~~~~ They were also selling Jeju souvenir snacks. Two hallabong (Jeju citrus) jellies for ₩5,000~~~ haha, and mango jelly for ₩6,000~~~

Oh, the burner built into the drum!! I have never seen anything like this hahaha. It really did seem like it would taste insanely good bubbling away right here.

We ordered the pot-lid dakdoritang and gyeran-mari (rolled omelet) at the kiosk, then waited~

The side dishes came out soon after. There was macaroni corn salad, one of my favorites~~ Yay~~~~ Plus kimchi, pickled onions, and pickled peppers.

A Generous Dakdoritang After 10 Minutes of Simmering

While we were chatting away, our dakdoritang was ready in no time. Wow, that presentation is wild hahahahahaha. Is this really for two people???? Hahaha. It looked like so much food.

The owner placed it on top of the drum like this, set a timer for 10 minutes, and said we could eat as soon as it was done. Also, weekday lunch comes with unlimited free ramen noodles~~~~~ Oh yesss!~~~~~~

A piping-hot gyeran-mari came out too. (₩7,000) Ahhh...... I am going to eat until I burst,,,,,,

After 10 minutes, the dakdoritang was done,,,,,,,, It had to be delicious,, You could tell without even trying it,,,,,, I especially loved that it had so many of my beloved rice cakes. They had soaked up all the seasoning and were so good, and the chicken was incredibly tender with not a hint of gamey smell...

And the potatoes were cooked sooo soft~~~~, practically falling apart in my mouth. Totally crazy good. The dakdoritang broth was seasoned just right, completely my style,,, Just ridiculously delicious.... There were quail eggs too, so it was fun picking out little bites.

We added ramen noodles too and slurped them up properly. This is the kind of dish that simply cannot be bad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, If I had had any room left, I would have gone for fried rice too,,,,, But I was seriously about to burst, and I am still sad I could not eat it,,,

Next time I want to come with more people and try all sorts of things. Truly, I approve of this Nohyeong-dong dakdoritang spot. It is a flavor anyone would like—nothing divisive about it. Highly, highly recommended!!!
