When you come to Jeju, you probably spend ages wondering what would make a good thank-you gift, right~~ haha I always pick up omaegi tteok (Jeju mugwort rice cakes) without even thinking twice! Freeze them and take one out whenever you fancy one—they work as a meal substitute, and they are a great snack for everyone from children to adults, so I always end up coming back for them! haha Today, let me introduce Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방), which is near Jeju Airport and in such a great spot for picking up a box just before heading home!

Omaegi tteok prices and the shop's rice cake selection

The moment I stepped inside, the nutty scent of rice cakes and grains made my mouth water!! Quite a few people were there to pick up boxed orders when I visited!! It really was a popular Jeju omaegi tteok spot for takeout. Omaegi tteok costs ₩6,000 for 5 pieces, ₩11,000 for 10, and ₩22,000 for 20; you can choose the varieties, and individual pieces are ₩1,000 each. Such reasonable prices too!

Along with omaegi tteok, they also sold the kinds of rice cakes you would find at a classic tteok shop. Garaetteok (long cylindrical rice cakes), jeolpyeon (pounded rice cakes), songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes), seolgi (steamed rice cakes), yakbap (sweet rice with nuts), yakgwa (honey cookies), misutgaru (roasted grain powder), glutinous rice mochi, sirutteok (layered steamed rice cake), red bean rice cakes, and more... There were countless varieties, and they all looked so, so delicious!!! They must be amazing at other rice cakes as well as omaegi tteok!

Gift packaging and delivery orders

Since so many people buy these as thank-you gifts while travelling, they had such pretty, upscale gift boxes ready to go! They are not tacky packaging at all—they look premium, so I would recommend them :) Suragan Tteokbang also offers delivery orders! Apparently, once people have tried them, many go home and order more by delivery.

As expected from a great omaegi tteok place, seeing stacks and stacks of delivery boxes at the back made me think, yes, I found a good one!! haha It made me oddly proud... The owner was also so kind, which put me in a good mood! If you plan to pick up on the same day, the rice cakes may be sold out, so I strongly recommend reserving one or two days ahead!!

Suragan Tteokbang delivery boxes in storage

Even the standard package was beautifully simple! I loved the thoughtful handle that makes the box easy to carry. It was a package that would be perfectly presentable as a gift just as it is. With the holidays coming up soon, it would be great as a holiday gift too! I bought one 20-piece box of omaegi tteok.

The many flavors in a 20-piece omaegi tteok box

There are 20 pieces, but somehow it feels like even more... This is omaegi tteok you can enjoy for just over ₩20,000 for 20 pieces. Suragan Tteokbang's omaegi tteok comes in a range of flavors—soybean powder, black sesame, seeds and nuts, mandarin, and red bean—so the best part is getting to enjoy some variety!

Soybean powder, black sesame, and nut omaegi tteok

This omaegi tteok is covered in all kinds of seeds and nuts, including peanuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds! It was generously coated with so many healthy nuts!! The red bean filling was not overly sweet either, with just the right sweetness for everyone to enjoy. The rice cake was pleasantly chewy without being too sticky, so it did not cling to my teeth and had such a lovely texture!

Cross-section of omaegi tteok with nuts

The soybean powder was light and savory, and I loved how clearly you could taste and smell the distinctive mugwort... If I had to name one downside, it would be that one bag is hard to feel satisfied with... I would need to open at least five bags in one sitting to be satisfied... That is how hard they are to stop eating..ㅠㅠ

Yellow omaegi tteok coated in black sesame

The black sesame ones had yellow rice cake!! They even seemed to have a hint of sweet pumpkin flavor! There was plenty of black sesame coating on the outside too, so that rich nutty sesame flavor never got lost and stayed delicious right to the end :) For anyone visiting Jeju, how about an omaegi tteok gift set?! If you are looking for several kinds of omaegi tteok and a more unusual omaegi tteok gift, I recommend Suragan Tteokbang!
