Jeju bar for spicy whelk salad: Golbaengi Pocha

The place we found for a drink around 8 p.m. in Jeju was Golbaengi Pocha (골뱅이포차) in Ido 2-dong. The name is very honest from the start, haha. It specializes in whelks.

It is on the first floor at 38 Namgwangbuk 1-gil, Jeju-si. It is open Monday from 18:30 to 00:30, and Tuesday through Sunday from 17:10 to 00:30. Last orders are at 23:40.

We ordered the whelk salad for ₩30,000 and yogurt sherbet for ₩10,000! To give you the conclusion first: if you order the whelk salad expecting the canned whelk salads you usually have, the size of the whelks may surprise you a little.

Near Jeju City Hall, with a neighborhood pocha atmosphere

Golbaengi Pocha is on Namgwangbuk 1-gil in Jeju-si, so it is worth considering when looking for a bar near Jeju City Hall or Jeju Court.

We visited around 8 p.m. and got in right away with no wait. It did not feel empty, though—there were customers who looked like locals inside, so it felt more like a comfortable neighborhood pocha (Korean pub) for a drink than a tourist-focused bar.

From the red and yellow tables onward, the interior really has the pocha feel its name promises! When we went, it was hard to find an easy place to park nearby. If you plan to drink, I recommend walking or taking a taxi rather than bringing a car in the first place.

₩30,000 whelk salad—how was the portion?

Our main order was the ₩30,000 whelk salad. At first glance, you might think, “₩30,000 for whelk salad?” But that thought changed a little as soon as the plate arrived. It was quite a lot for two people.

Rather than feeling like the portion had been padded out with lots of vegetables, it had big pieces of whelk throughout, so whelks kept appearing as we ate.

The currently published menu description says they use wild-caught whelks, and after trying them, the texture was different from the canned whelks I usually encounter. Every whelk was large, with a distinctly springy bite.

What I personally liked even more was the dressing! It was loaded with Cheongyang chili peppers and properly spicy—more than I expected.

I expected a sweet-and-tangy whelk salad, but this place uses plenty of Cheongyang chili peppers. So the heat builds as you eat, haha. I love this kind of spicy flavor, and picking up whelks and vegetables together was really delicious. The somyeon (thin wheat noodles) also comes with the whelk salad rather than needing to be added separately.

Mix the somyeon through the dressing and it is a drinking snack that is surprisingly filling. Rather than feeling like two people ordered one snack with drinks, it felt more like we were having a proper full plate.

An unexpected pairing with yogurt sherbet

As we kept eating, the Cheongyang chili peppers gradually started attacking, haha. So we ordered the ₩10,000 yogurt sherbet to calm our mouths down.

Even the tub has a cute, old-fashioned yogurt look, and when you open the lid, it is full of sherbet. The flavor is just as expected: sweet yogurt!

But you will understand why we ordered it when you take a bite right after the whelk salad. It cools down your spicy mouth with something sweet and cold, and the pairing was much better than expected. If you do not handle spicy food well, I would recommend the whelk salad plus yogurt sherbet combination too.

What two people ordered

The two of us first ordered one whelk salad, and the portion was enough. We added the yogurt sherbet just as the heat started to build, and that order worked quite well. Rather than driving and worrying about parking, it would be much more convenient to make this part of your next drinking night and travel by taxi or on foot.
